Golf Chipping Drills Plus Practice = A Really Fast Way To Lower Your Scores

When's the last time you practiced some fundamental golf chipping drills?  Last week, last month, maybe never?  That's crazy, because it's something we can do at the practice green or in the backyard.

It doesn't take a lot of time and the rewards are gigantic.  Think what kind of scores we could shoot if we eliminated the skulls, the fats, the thins, the chunks, the blades, and the shanks.  And think how much better our putting would be if we were looking at short putts instead of 20 footers following our chip to the green.

Now's the time to get out the practice balls and concentrate on some solid chipping drills that will save us plenty of strokes around the greens.

This page will take you through the proper chipping technique and drills. For additional chipping information, you might want to visit my Short Game Instruction site. And, you should pick up a copy of my Free Short Game Guide while it's still available. All of these resources are targeted at making you a better player right away.

Golf Chipping Drills - The Hands Lead the Clubface, Always

You don't need a ball for this one. Just your DRIVER.

Get into a chipping set-up with your driver. Take your grip about half way down the shaft. The clubhead won't reach the ground and the butt end of the driver will be resting against your side.

Place most of your weight on your front foot, keeping your hands well forward in front of the clubhead. With your arms, make short, chipping swings, back and through. With the driver shaft against your side, you are forced to keep your hands in front of the clubhead.

For effective chipping, your hands must always lead the clubface.

Golf Chipping Drills - Hitting Down on the Ball

Keep your weight up front and the ball in back

The chip shot is a descending blow with the hands leading the clubface. Practice with this set-up.

Lift the heel of your back foot so only your toe is touching the ground. Consequently, nearly all of your weight will be on your front foot. Put the ball back in your stance, aligned off the toe of your back foot.

With this set-up, you will be chipping with a descending blow and your hands will stay in front of the clubface throughout the chipping motion. That's how you get chips to fly consistently to their target.

Golf chipping drills are easy to do and play such a significant role in lowering your scores. Make sure to invest the time.

Golf Chipping Drills- Hitting the Spot

Don't chip at the hole - chip to a landing target

Start this drill with a 7 iron. Between the ball and the hole, stick a tee in the green where you think the chipped ball needs to land to roll close to the hole.

Using the 7 iron, try a few shots, adjusting the tee as necessary. Try to land the ball as close as possible to the tee. Repeat until you can consistently chip close to the tee and roll the ball close to the hole.

Now move the tee closer to the hole and switch to a 9 iron. Go through the same process. Move the tee closer to the hole again and switch to your favorite wedge.

Of all the golf chipping drills, lots of players prefer this one.

Golf Short Game Instruction

It's All About Technique and Decision Making

Short game instruction is absolutely critical to playing better golf and lowering your scores. That's why Phil Mickelson works with Dave Pelz and Sergio Garcia hangs out with Stan Utley. Statistics tell us that in an 18 hole round of golf, over 60% of our strokes will be short game shots from inside 100 yards.

In a round of golf, over 60% of our strokes are short game shots. But that's probably the part of our golf game that we practice least. It's so much more fun to launch monster drives on the range than to stress our back working on 5 footers. But, ironically, a 300 yard drive counts the same as a 3 foot putt.

There's no question, the most effective way to lower our scores is to get serious about our short game. Below are some sites that will help you with short game tips, techniques, and drills.
