Golf GPS Systems - How Many Are There?

There is only one type of Golf GPS System but there are a number of different companies that have produced both hand held and cart mounted models.
All golf GPS systems work off satellite information and the abbreviation GPS stand for Global Positioning System.
Originally and exclusively the domain of the military, GPS usage is now used widely in every day life and golf is just one of many applications.

Different Golf GPS Systems

How Many Do You Have To Choose From?

Having agreed there is only one basic system let's discuss the wide choice of models available to us as golfers.
When I first started researching which Golf GPS model I wanted to buy I thought it would be a pretty easy choice but soon discovered there are a lot of different brands out there all offering different features and functions and all varying in price - in some cases this was quite considerable.
One of the systems I eliminated early on was the use of my mobile or cell phone as a potential GPS. I wanted to spend time playing golf not trying to configure my telephone!
So I opeted for looking at hand held golf GPS systems since I still walk when playing golf.
I soon discoverd there was a big selection of models and the following is a list of the most popular ones (in no particular order):
Golf Buddy with three models.
Sonocaddie with 2 models and another one due out soon.
Golf Logix.
Golf Guru with 2 models.
Skycaddie which has 4 or 5 models.
Sure Shot.
uPro.
iGolf with 2 models.
Prices ranged from just under $150.00 to as much as $450.00 for the basic unit but with many there are additional costs for downloading courses.
The cost of downloading courses can be substntial and does occasionally lock you in!
It was all very confusing and in the end took a lot of research and testing to decide which was the model I wanted.

Where to Get The Best Information On Golf GPS Systems.

Finding information comparing all these models was extremely difficult.

Searching for the right Golf GPS for myself at the right price proved more difficult than I could have imagined because of the various options available.
In the end I became a bit of an "expert" and put together a spreadsheet which showed me all I needed to know in one glance. The result was the birth of Digicaddie - a website dedicated to helping others find the information I took so long to accumulate.
