Golf Swing Power - The Release

Ranked #12,016 in Sports & Recreation, #289,831 overall

During the proper golf swing, power is stored in the backswing and is released through the hands and wrists during the downswing. It is important for every golfer to keep this power stored until the last second before releasing in order to maximize both power and accuracy.

A Brief Description - Golf Swing Release

Keep your weight on the right side of your body (for a right-handed golfer) throughout the entire backswing. This means that when you are at the top of your backswing, your weight will be on your right side and ready to shift to the left.

Shift your weight to your left foot as the downswing begins. Your body will start to unwind and generate the power that you need in the golf swing.

Keep your wrists in a locked position during the beginning of the downswing. This is called a "wrist lag" because as the rest of your body is releasing, your wrists remained cocked and ready to produce power.

Release your wrists right before the club makes contact with the ball. The longer the wrists remain cocked, the more power is produced. Unfortunately, the release of the wrists is all about timing and requires a lot of practice.

Practice the swing over and over. Golf is not an easy game and the only way to improve is to practice. Trying to generate power through the wrist release will cause many inaccurate shots as you work on the timing.

Below are a couple of excellent videos that explain more about this vital power component in the golf swing.

This is an excellent video look at the traditional view of releasing your hands in the golf swing.

This is a slightly different look at release. Although this is specific to Arnold Palmer's swing,
more and more instructors are starting to this as the proper way to release a golf club.

Summary

I will let you decide which of these descriptions of releasing your hands is more correct.

Actually, I think both are actually part of the release.

I get cleaner hits and more power/distance when I use the "hammer" type of release through contact and, as long as I keep my left elbow close to my body it ensures my follow through automatically completes what most people consider the release.

The Simple Golf Swing System

The next time you play golf, pay attention to how the people you are playing with swing. If you watch you will be quite amused at the gyrations they go through to hit a golf ball. These gyrations are exactly why most golfers are very inconsistent, even if they practice a lot.

You have heard that what you really need is a smooth, repeatable golf swing. A wild golf swing with too many moving parts is hardly repeatable. But, we all do it because we are trying to hit the ball (hard) a long distance.

The best course I have found for developing a simple, smooth, repeatable golf swing is entitled The Simple Golf Swing.

This book and video training will seem strange at first but I assure you, if you practice what is in this course your friends will be amazed and your scores will be much improved. Only $47 for the entire course and it comes with a 60 day money back guarantee. If this course doesn't drastically improve your scores you get your money back.

You owe it to yourself to check this out.
