Do you play golf? now here is a challenge for you, GolfCross

The Game at a Glance

GolfCross® goal-golf or goalf is golf with goals instead of holes and it's played with an oval ball instead of a round one. You use the same rules as golf (with a few exceptions and additions) and the same clubs — though you won't need your putter. Essentially you're still playing golf, it's simply that the target is now suspended in mid-air and every shot is pretty much going where you want it to.

I would appreciate 5 stars for this informative Lens about GolfCross.

Wikipedia on Golfcross

GolfCross is a variant of golf developed by Burton Silver. It is similar to golf, except that it uses an oval ball and holes are replaced by suspended goal nets. In addition, the green is replaced by a "yard", and a player whose ball lies in the yard has the right to turn the goal net so as to face them.

According to Silver, the oval ball is designed so as to give the player more control over where the ball travels to, and it produces a humming sound when hit in certain positions. Because the oval ball spins on two axes, it is almost impossible to hook or slice it. However, controlled hooks and slices are easily achieved by angling the ball on the specially designed tee adaptor. Back-spinning the ball and running it on is also achievable by the way in which the ball is set up on the tee.

According to NZ player Greg Turner, GolfCross is a more strategic and tactical game than regular golf, especially in match play, and because players are shooting for goal it tends to be more dramatic and exciting to play and watch.

GolfCross can bring back many advantages to normal golf. The mindset that the ball will hardly ever slice or hook can be bought back to golf and used effectively.

There are GolfCross courses in Germany, Argentina, England, Ireland, Scotland and New Zealand. It is still unclear how widely GolfCross is played. Recent interest has centered on its ecological advantages. Because it doesn't use putting greens, agricultural chemicals can be done away with, and because the ball is easy for any player to back spin, fairways don't require irrigating to keep them soft in order to reduce run-on.

Basic GolfCross

How to hit the ball

The Oval Ball

When you play with the oval GolfCross® ball you'll be playing with a genuinely smart ball which, despite appearances, is actually more
aerodynamically stable than the round one you know so well. Amongst other things it will enable you to:

1. Hit the ball straight every time.

2. Perform controlled slices and hooks with ease.

3. Adjust the degree of fade or draw you require.

4. Generate backspin - even with a wood or out of the rough.

5. Apply top spin to achieve long low running shots and,

6. if you really want to show off, do double curves and play tunes.

Burton Silver

GolfCross GoalGolfing was invented by Burton Silver from Wellington, New Zealand with the intention to combine NZ national sports rugby and golf. GolfCross is played with goals instead of holes and you play with an oval ball instead of a round one. Burton Silver has designed special rules for the game that are adding a strategic aspect to it. However, the shape of the oval ball offers also better control for beginners.

Goal Posts

The goals are genuinely hand made in New Zealand and are, by the way, designed by industrial designer and chief mechanist of the "Lord of the Rings" movie, Dominic Taylor. The brief was to produce a goal that is light, foldable, aesthetically pleasing, stock-proof, non-corrosive, able to be turned to a number of fixed positions, capable of providing a 99.99% efficient ball capture system, as well as being able to withstand 100mph winds. However, due to very expensive transport costs we are currently in the process of investigating possibilities to get the goals manufactured in Europe under license of GolfCross NZ.

GolfCross merchandise

In contrary to normal golf courses where green-keeping is quite costly and sometimes also environmentally debated, for GolfCross you only need a piece of land and make sure the grass is kept short so players can find their ball. There are no restrictions in terms of the number of goals at a GolfCross course so you may as well start with 5 goals. Since the initial investment is rather low - especially compared to a normal golf course - fees can also kept relatively low and thus attract more players. Naturally, there will be an ongoing stream of revenues through selling the balls as well as GolfCross merchandise.

The yard

The Yard
In GolfCross® there are no greens but there are yards of various shapes marked out with pegs round each goal. The yard is important because its only when your ball is inside the yard that you can turn the goal to face you in one of three set positions. So the approach shot is critical. Failure to make the yard could mean having to shoot for goal from an oblique angle or even having to lob your ball over the side netting. From outside the yard you must always shoot to the original facing position of the goal, as held by the chain. This rule does not apply in match play.
A's ball is inside the yard so he can turn the goal to face him.

B's ball is outside the yard. He will have to play into the yard in order to turn the goal mouth towards him or he can try to shoot in over the top of the goal (a punt) from outside the yard.

The GolfCross creator

In a recent interview Burton said:
"I wouldn't describe myself as a golfer, though I've become a bit of a GolfCross® caddy. I don't have a handicap and I only play occasionally. You could say that I play with golf rather than playing golf. Essentially I'm lousy at it which gives me a great respect for those who play the game well and in developing the oval ball and creating the game of GolfCross® I've had a lot of help and advice from some very good golfers.
"I think if I were a good golfer and was therefore imbued with all the wonderful golfing traditions - I wouldn't have been removed enough from it to see how it could change. And I think those traditions would have inhibited me even if I could see another way of playing it. Being a New Zealander also helps because living in a 'new' country means you're not so bound by convention and being isolated means we have a real 'do-it-yourself' mentality.

"It seems strange and sad to me that we don't do more to encourage a spirit of innovation in sport. Because inventing new activities and getting people to participate in them is so exciting and stimulating for all concerned. It always leads to new discoveries about our physical and mental capabilities and skills, and it presents us with new challenges, which is surely what sport should be about.

"It's my belief that the creation of the new in sport is as important as the celebration of the old. That actively experimenting with sport and staging new events challenges human ingenuity and reinvigorates the human spirit and I'd love to think that GolfCross® may in some way act as a kind of catalyst in encouraging us to explore all the other new sporting challenges that are just waiting to be discovered out there."
