Free Beginners Online Golf Tips

So you'd like to play a better game of golf. The problem is you are not as flexible or as fit as a golf pro and your golf swing is far from "Tiger-terrific." Your game definitely needs developing.

Well, the first thing to know is that there is no secret technique to improving your golf swing and lowering your handicap. There are however a few things you can do that when done correctly will improve your game of golf. So if you want to increase your skills and abilities as a golfer here are five great tips.

Golf Tips Online: 1 - Maximum Speed Comes From the Wrists

Most golfers ignore the fact that speed comes from the wrist and wrongly think maximum speed comes from

  • Feet

  • Arms (elbows)

  • Torso

  • Shoulders

  • Back (hips)

  • Knees (legs)

You can understand the thinking behind this, as when you address the ball at swing, the shoulders perform most of the movement before the downswing. Contrast the position of your shoulders at downswing against the position of your shoulders after the ball has been hit and the club is positioned parallel to the ground again. How far do your shoulders move?

Most golfers would display an average angle of 45 degrees between the first position and the second position. Compare that with how far the club has moved over 180 degrees.

The shoulders contribute to less than half the distance the club has travelled.

If the shoulders are responsible for you obtaining maximum speed in your swing, how come their movement at downswing is only slight? What makes up the other half of 180 degrees during swing?

It's the wrists of course. The wrists (or hands) are the parts of the body that contribute the most when it comes to generating maximum speed at the club head. The arms and shoulders can only move through a rotational angle of less than 50 degrees, while the head of the club can move through 180 degrees.

All of the rest of the movement is a function of the wrists.

This doesn't mean that your golf swings should rely on the strength of your wrists as if nothing else matters. Golf is about the whole body. Everything is connected, when you start the downswing, the movement of your shoulders will initiate movement of your arms, then through to your hands and finally through to your wrists.

Golf Tips Online: 2 - Improve Your Motor Control

Motor control really comes into play when you're aiming for short golf shots (the ones less than 100 yards). Apart from motor skill control, you also need muscular strength in the forearms, hands and wrists to play effective short game golf.

It makes sense that to improve in this area you need to develop muscle strength and improve motor control. This will allow you to increase your endurance for the short games, set your hands where they should be and hold the club face in the right position.

Motor control and muscle strength and are two related but distinct aspects of improving your short game.

Where as muscle strength helps your endurance, motor control is the interaction between your muscles, brain and nerves.

The type of golf fitness exercises you need to concentrate on are ones that develop not only your physical strength but also ones that improve your ability to coordinate your brain functions with movement of your hands, arms and wrists.

You should try out some balance exercises, such as juggling. This can help develop the co-ordination between your muscles, brain and nerves.

Golf Tips Online: 3 - Knock Strokes Off Your Golf Game

Every golfer wants to knock more strokes off their game. Unless you're one of the worlds best players, knocking strokes off your game is one of your main aims.

Can it be done? How do you do it?

Well yes it can be done. In fact, the surest way to reduce your strokes is also very easy - you can do it by correcting your golf slice.

After playing golf for many years a lot of golfers wonder why their game isn't improving. The main problem is that they've been slicing the ball, often without realising.

It doesn't matter how much practice you put in, if what you've been practicing is wrong, there is a fair chance you're going to continue doing things the wrong way and consequently never see a single improvement.

On the other hand, if you correct any slice you have in your game right now, you'll soon be seeing some improvements in your scores.

The first thing to do is look at your golf stance. Stand with feet shoulder width apart, with your shoulders aligned.

Next, adjust your hands for a correct golf club grip.

Hold the club with your left hand, with your thumb along the club shaft, wrapping right hand over the left, with the left thumb resting against the side of your right palm.

Making corrections in your golf club grip or stance could affect your golf slice in a dramatic way. Therefor you should be trying to obtain a proper grip and stance, making tiny adjustments all the time, until you get the result you desire.

What if you could discover the secret that top tour pros use to knock strokes off their game, would that boost your game?

Golf Tips Online: 4 - Performance Pitching From Bad Lies

It happens to every golfer, sooner or later you end up in a bad lie. It's a fact of golf. When you can't help but land in a bad lie, such as a divet, what can you do to successfully get out of that position? You need focus to escape from bad lies. When your game has focus, pitching from bare ground or a divot is not hard at all.

Here are 5 great strategies to make getting out of a bad lie relatively easy:

  • Place your hands ahead of the ball. Keep your left hand firm. When you impact the ball, the majority of your weight should be transferred to your front foot, while keeping your head centered over the ball.

  • In the downswing phase, make your attack angle steeper, while applying more force.

  • Use a club with a sharp leading edge. Generally most players like to use a sand wedge. However, if you want to improve your chances of striking the ball solidly, you should be using a pitching wedge or 9 iron, which has a sharper leading edge than a normal sand wedge.

  • Position the ball in the centre or the back of your stance. Centering your weight over the ball is essential to pitching from a bad lie.

As you flex your right knee your upper body will coil over, then shift your weight slightly backward. You're now in the perfect position to hit the ball with a strong descending strike from its back to drive it forward with more energy to get back on the fairway.

  • Set wrists a bit earlier. The only difference between the downswing in hitting a pitch shot from a clean fairway and one taken from a bad lie is in the wrists. Earlier in the takeaway, set your wrists earlier than normal. This will allow your hands to adjust to the force.

  • Your swing is essentially the same when hitting from a bad lie as it is from the fairway. All you need to do is put more muscle into it, but not too much because you want to get on to the fairway and not end up in the rough again.

Golf Tips Online: 5 - The Importance Of Your Drive

Greg Norman has often said "Drive for show, putt for dough." In his book Shark Attack, Greg Norman, writes: "Don't ever sell me on that line. If you can't put your tee-shot in play, the smoothest stroke in the world won't help you enough. To my mind, the most important shot in golf is the drive."

Greg Norman is not alone in this philosophy. It's said that the drive is one of the most important strokes in golf, especially if you're an amateur.

Instead of spending all your time taking short strokes getting to the green, seize the opportunity early by focusing on the drive and getting some distance.

Pretty obvious really. The problem is, a majority of golfers are intimidated by the driver. So other than taking another set of golf lessons, what can be done about it?

Simple, get a new driver. With today's technology, drivers are light years ahead of the Number 1 wood of several years ago. Beyond that, it's all mental.

The mental component of the game is to create harmony between your brain and muscles. You need to focus on your desire to hit the golf ball with perfection. Then think about how you wish to translate that desire into the correct contractions of the muscles, sequenced and timed so that the driving club will move in the direction of the ball, the club head hitting it squarely and with great force.

Although it sounds complicated, it really isn't. What about when you were learning to ride a bike? Did you have to tell your legs to peddle? even when your hands were operating the handle bars? No, it all became an unconscious process

It's the same thing with golf. Your subconscious mind is the ultimate master of your drive. If you have made a first rate drive before, then your subconscious mind knows the proper process and action. The nerve impulses, the sequence of muscle contractions, your subconscious mind has all the information it needs do it again.

Remember: Keep your conscious mind from distracting your subconscious mind by keeping focus on the game.

You can improve your golf game through numerous techniques. With correct practice and adequate time you will see a dramatic improvement off the tee (and just as importantly, so will your peers).

Nice lens. Your 5 tips are good for beginner golfers. I totally agree with tip number 5. If you do not start off the hole with a good tee shot it is so hard to recover to score well.
