GOLF HISTORY

Who invented golf

The Scots are credited with originating the modern game of golf. Its popularity in Scotland in th mid-15 century was such that King James II prevailed on Parliament to deemphasize the game so that peolpe would devote more attention to archery, a sport important to the defense of the country.

The first rules and standards were set by the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, who played their game over the nearby Links of Leith. Until this organization was formed in 1744, disputes were settled by senior players on the course. On March 17, 1744, the town council of Edinburgh, by petition of the Honourable Company, provided a silver club to be competed for annually. The winner of the club became the Captain of Golf, whose arbitration of all disputes touching the game was final.
