Flat cars are usually completely flat or there are some that indent in the center for heave items such as motors or tractors.
The old flat cars were wood on top, with slots on the side to put in wood steaks or chain. Now days they are metal with metal steaks, and some have walls in the front and back. Many of the older flat cars, you will find with tractor loads or semis. You can also find military flat cars with tanks and the indented flat cars with missiles. Flat cars were also used for containers and truck vans. Now days they have container cars that are open in the middle and only fit containers.
Some idea for flat car loads:
- Wood planks and boards
- Military vehicles
- Boats Tractors
- Industrial machinery
- Farm machinery
- Sculptures
- Fair rides
- Christmas
- bands
- And anything you are into
In O scale a flat car can be a hang out for Homies, they are just the right size.

Gondolas are a short walled flat car where they are loaded from above with a crane. They are often used for scrap metal loads or anything of size and great weight that wont blow out. T
hey can be nicely weathered with graffiti added and you may put anything in them that you like.
- Tooth picks
- Wood chunks
- Rocks
- Train parts
- Dead cars
- Knick knacks
- And so on
They look great when there is a long string of matching cars being pulled.

Why Fill Hopping Hopper Train Cars
They come in couple styles. The open top ones for non-parishable loads such as gravel. The covered hoppers which are tall and have a top with covered holes for things such as grains and seed.
Were talking about the open top ones here, because they are loadable.
Here again they look great weathered with some graffiti.
For the realistic look, you can buy fills in the scale you like all ready made. They are resin and come in several types of rock and shape selections to match your car's size.
Skulpy can also be used to form a dirt pile shape, baked then painted.
Also you can get real looking loose gravel or use Critter litter from the pet store with is crushed walnut shells, fill the car part way with foam then with glue mixed with the shells fill in the car to where it looks like it was poured in from above. Let it dry then paint to the color you want such as black for coal.

The Adorable Ore Train Cars
I love the metal ones with a little light weathering. A small heard of them look great with a shay or small steam locomotive.
Same things apply as with the hoppers.
Something to consider is putting a little gold flake in with the gravel or find larger grey rocks and glue some bits of gold glitter on them. So it looks like you are bringing out gold ore. Yay!
Search eBay for ore cars made by Varney or Roundhouse, because those are often metal. They just have a nicer feel.

This shows a brown resin load and an unpainted Sculpy clay load.

Weathering and Graffiti
Other than loading your fill-able train car, it can also be made to look weathered, and with some graffiti, just like you would see in real life.
When I have worked down by the tracks, many cars in a row would go by with amazing graffiti. Also most of the cars have dirt, rust and dents. There's a couple of super old gondolas down by the vet. Their sides are bowed with dents from their heavy load of metal or rock.
The dirt on your train car would reflect what it carries. If it carries coal, then black drips down the sides, and some dirt and rust around the wheels. Most train wheels and lower carriages are rusty and/or oily, except where the wheel meets the rail.
Below you can find decals of Graffiti, or you can have it done for you. Also you can go Here to learn some weathering.
