Dog Food
Giving your dog the foundation for a healthy life should be the primary goal of all pet owners. There are several commercial dog products that are available on the shelfs today, however it is important for dog owners to know how to choose their products wisely. While we know that we should provide our dogs with a nutritious diet, there are a few unessential products that should be avoided. Many low quality dog foods are still available on the market today, even though most people are now aware of what ingredients are beneficial to their dogs. Improper nutrition has been known to cause certain diseases within a dog, as well as obesity and allergies. Providing your dog with a healthy and properly balanced diet has been known to have essential benefits such as increasing your dog's lifespan. I will help you discover which types of products to avoid as well as tips on choosing the right brand for your dog. Try to remember that what may work for one dog may not work for the next, establish which brand your dog prefers and stick with it.
Where to buy high quality dog food
It has been discovered that high quality dog foods can be found in pet stores or online at several specialised pet stores.
Cheaper dog foods are usually found in the local grocery store.
Guidelines to follow when looking at ingredients
Try choosing a product that is high in meat content, dogs love meat as well. When looking at the ingredients the first ingredient should be a specified meat. If other meats are listed within the ingredients that would be great as well, however this is not necessary. Products that have used the same grain ingredient more than twice should not be considered as this is not considered a well balanced and nutritious product.High quality grains such as brown rice, barley and oatmeal has become the standard for the top dog food manufacturers. Organic grains are essentially a bonus, try looking for products like these. Try to avoid buying products that have wheat and corn, they are known as a less nutritional element in dog food, most dogs are allergic to it as well so this is a definite disadvantage.
Bad foods for dogs
Spicy food
Sauce
Sweets
Fats
Chemical additives
Other foods to avoid
Try to avoid giving your dog foods such as cake or leftover chicken bones; these are really bad for your dog. Another thing that a bad nutrition can cause is diarrhea, a change in diet can be confusing to your dog's body, causing diarrhea. It is important to keep your dog on a consistent diet. Avoid buying foods that have a high concentration of preservatives, these should be avoided at all costs (BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin). Human Grade foods
I know we've all heard about human grade foods, but do not get sucked into the hype. What i have discovered is that it is all relative, your dog does not care if their food is human grade or not. There is also no scientific proof that human grade products are essentially better for your dog. All than "human grade" means is that companies buy their products from places which sell to humans, that's all it is. Human grade foods are not to be consumed by humans as once they arrive at the pet food manufacturing plant; they are considered animal grade products My Estimates for an adult dog
Protein Content: 22-26%
Fat content: 13-15%
My Tips
I tend to feed my dog medium grade foods as this is what works best for my dog. I tend to avoid products that are cheap and those that are pricy, my dog does not respond well to these dog foods. When buying a dog food one should realise that price has nothing to do with the quality of the product, it is all about finding out which product works best for your dogs. Try not to get influenced by the media, their main objective is to sell their product and that is all, think for yourself and establish what works best.As I said before what works for one dog may not work for another. When testing a product try buying a low quantity of goods, test them on your dog and if there are no negative side effects then try using the product for a longer period of time. I know this may be a hassle to some, but if you care about your dog isn't it all worth it? I have tried out several brands, myself most of which did not work out so I know how stressful it may become.
