Designer vs Brand, What's the difference???

Many people think they have designer eyeglass frames simply because their pair might be emblazoned by a big bold name that has been pushed heavily in malls and advertisements across the country making it recognizable. My opinion is that such eyewear isn't so much designer, as it is brand name. Designer eyeglass frames often come from small optical houses, many in Europe, and many of which unless you are really immersed in eyewear fashion the average consumer may never have heard of. Such glasses are not emblazoned with brand names or logos, they often carry a specific visual style and use technologies specific to the designer line that make them recognizable. In no way am I stating that one type of eyewear, brand name vs designer, is better as a whole. I do however feel it is important to highlight the differences between the two and to highlight a few great companies producing true designer eye wear.

LA Eyeworks

Designer Frames from California

LA Eyeworks Eyeglasses are unmistakable. Not only are these designer frames fun and funky the company itself is as well.
The owners of this progressive company are activists for both local and global issues designing frames and donating them or their proceeds to various causes. They also utilize their store windows in California to display art installations featuring their glasses while communicating their views on important issues.

The frames are influenced by architectural styles, artistic colors and sculptors' lines. The immense product line has numerous colors and styles, from retro-inspired cat eye frames to big, bold, modern frames. It also changes on a regular basis. LA Eyeworks frames are crafted from high-quality acetates or modern metals featuring artistic color combinations. All frames feature hand-finishing and many are handmade.

Attention to design and detail coupled with artistic flair has made this line of frames popular with celebrities across the globe. They are responsible for outfitting Elton John in a number of his fun frames as well as an endless list of others.

Mykita

Cool, Clean Designer Frames From Berlin

Mykita Eyeglass Frames are unmistakable. Best known for the Collection No 1 series, frames constructed of .5mm gauge stainless sheet steel that has been cut and folded in to various frame shapes. The Collection No 1 eyeglasses are incredibly light weight and allow for a myriad of configuration options for the wearer. Collection No 2 was introduced 2 years after the stainless steel line and is constructed of full bodied acetate and are available in only 9 colors. The design of both collections is clean and no nonsense.

What differentiates Mykita from the rest of the eye wear world in addition to their impeccable design is their proprietary lens technologies. Collection No 1 glasses feature snap hinge designs comprised of simple plug connection, traditional screw construction is a thing of the past for Mykita. Collection No 2 features yet another screwless hinge technology, as all frames have a connecting element that hugs the front and temples in the style of a sheath.

All of the frames are constructed in their entirety by hand in Mykita's production facility located in Berlin.

Salt Optics

Timeless Classic Design from Southern California

Salt Eyewear is yet another exquisitely designed line of eyeglasses hailing from Southern California. In contrast to the bright bold colors and funky designs of LA Eyeworks, Salt leans towards a minimalist sensibility. Opting towards timeless classic designs brought up to modernity by choice of materials and design technology.

In addition to their optical line, Salt features a beautiful line of plano sunglasses. All Salt sunglasses feature PFV Polarized lens technology and come in either glass or CR-39 material. In addition to exquisitely designed sunglass frames Salt takes the market of plano sunglasses up a notch by featuring a color palette of 8 lens choices. Something perfect for every light condition.

Designer Eyewear

It's not about names everyone knows, it's about quality.

Many brand name companies started out as small designer houses and some where along the line quantity became more important than quality. This has not occured with any of the above companies. All of the names listed above are possibly new to you unless you frequent high end optical shops or read fashion magazines. These small companies all focus on quality and have very clear design principles. This is clear in the frames that they produce.
