Squidoo people with a good heart

Ranked #2,524 in Squidoo Community, #219,045 overall

I am sure to be adding to this list of people . . .

I have only been on Squidoo since August 2010. I have been privileged to meet some of the finest writers and humanitarians on here. I must admit too, I have found quite the opposite, as well.

In this lens, I hope to introduce you to some of the great writers who are trying to do some good in this world.

These are people who get the big picture. No they aren't in it for love and money, they are in it to help others. They also support others trying to make a difference and aren't afraid to say, "You should change this..." or "I have to disagree with some point(s) raised here . . ." or "hey I needed another option in your poll or duel."

By doing so, their expertise has contributed greatly to mine (and others). None of us 'know it all' - even if you hold a PhD. So read on about those folks that I visit regularly and look forward to hear from.

The list is in no particular order, just what I recall from memory. Under your name, the words written in the subtitle are what first came to my mind when I thought of you. Hope it helps!

I've been asked 'How can I thank whoever nominated me for a purple star?' and honestly I do not know. Jack2205 has this quote on his Bio page which came to mind when I was asked that question:

Intermission

The next few sections are devoted to some questionable things happening on Squidoo. I was once told by someone 'higher up' who blessed my lenses that 'tagging' my work was 'like a compliment.' Guess what? It isn't . . . in the long run. The lesser quality lens gets a boost from having someone else 'tag' his/her work. Most people don't even know about this. Those who DO have been told it helps them (albeit temporarily).

You can skip all this, just scroll down to Pika-the-black-cat.

Important!

Quick way to check integrity...

On your dashboard page (at the top, right) enter 'sousababy' in the search box. You'll have 14 pages before you. Lenses by: ChrisDay, Wednesday_Elf, dellgirl, Poutine, sidther, GrowWear, CastleRoy, SereneSea, LabKitty, Norma_Budden, MTF-briguy, hotbrain, awelldressedbullet, ravenko, JoanneOtt, sorana & raphaelo/raffael are automatically 'tagged.' These 17 folks made reference to me in their lenses. I will not ever 'tag' the 66 people in my good heart series of lenses (or any lenses) = respect.

Have your say . . .

About tagging other people's lenses

This lens proves that the 'tagging' done by the automatic search engines is done with integrity. That is, the 12 people who made mention of me within their original written text (or in subtitles) have indeed, shown up under the Squidoo Search name 'sousababy.' Kind of like a virtual handshake wherein we BOTH contributed to the work on a lens. Makes sense.

However, apparently it is 'okay' to 'tag' someone's lens without their knowledge or permission. Hmmm, I don't like it. What do you think? I feel it is common courtesy to ALWAYS mention to someone where/when you plan to use their work or make reference to them.

Would you want to be asked permission first (OR at some point in time) from someone who wants to 'tag' your work?

Loading

Yes, I would like to know that they are tagging my work since it will show up under their Squidoo name

sousababy says:

Dear Pastiche,
I thank you for your candor. The thing is . . tagging steals too. I'd invite you (and others) to visit my lens: http://www.squidoo.com/does-lensrank-make-sense for documented proof.
How it steals? By tagging the hard, honest work of others, the 'tagger' gains thousands (not hundreds) of positions in lensrank. What some do (and I've documented it carefully in the last year) is 'tag' other people's work that have higher quality work, often 10 pages worth = 1000 lenses authored by others. My question is this . . why isn't QUALITY driving lensrank more? (I think we all know of a lens within the Top 100 that outranks a purple star or LotD one - don't we?)
Respectfully,
Rose

TheHealthGuy says:

There is always someone who will try to "work" the system or use others to get what they want such as tagging someone to ride their wave, using their copy or ideas, or anything else that is possible and may enhance their ride to fame but I figure if I can't get there myself I don't need it or want it. Besides, I have no need or desire to be famous, number 1 on squidoo or liked by everyone. However ... I don't want to be used like a piece of software either.

sousababy says:

Dear JJNW and BigGirlBlue,
It must be a very deliberate thing, since I STILL do not know how it is done. All I can say is . . this lens proves it must be intentional.

sousababy says:

Dear Lisa, This lens will NOT show up under your username UNLESS I acknowledge you in the text or subtitles. The MAIN titles (where I have named 24 lensmasters) does not show up under 'sousababy' (NOR should it). For example, I have featured even featured Margo Arrowsmith's work and STILL her lens does not show up under sousababy.
It MUST be deliberate . . and, it may be a Squid greeter or angel doing it (you'd be surprised).

BigGirlBlue says:

I still don't understand what this "tagging" business is.

bethd821 says:

I didn't know about this feature. I wonder if I've done it or had it done to me.

pheonix76 says:

I had never known about this or thought about it. Hmmm. I wouldn't mind IF this generated traffic to my lenses. But since it seems like tagging would only promote one's own lenses by using an established squid's username I don't think it's fair or cool. Too many people out there with no "internet etiquette."

mukeshdaji says:

This is all new to me, with that said, I don't think I want my work floating around elsewhere without my knowledge. I need to read up on this to better understand the implications.

Tipi says:

Yes, always tell. In fact, I just did that when I lensrolled and featured one of your lenses this morning. Its just nice to know. I wonder if you would have preferred that I asked for permission. It is a great lens by the way!

sousababy says:

As Gil (the great) explained previously, subtitles are treated the same as text. (Thought I'd put that here to condense those modules). Therefore, my previous comment (below) was made prior to this coming to light (takes longer for automatic search engines to tag subtitles than the words withIN the text).

Nah, I don't care, anyone can tag my lenses, I never need to know about it

Pastiche says:

Tags bother me far less than the many who post copyright protected images AND those who link to image or PDF files instead of to HTML source pages. Anyone tagging with my name won't have my style, reputation or content quality. Ever.

JJNW says:

I have been here 3 years and even after reading this, have no idea what you are talking about. Like BigBlueGirl, I am baffled. I would Like to understand...

LisaAuch says:

If I leave a comment on your lens! and I go to search my username LisaAuch - THIS LENS will show up on the search reults! YOU personally have never manually added my name! I always wondered when i searched my name i would show up on other peoples lenses, and the only reason (unless they can hack into the source code, I can see is I have commented on their lens?
You username goes viral!
Using someone username in the "tags" section is NOT good practice, and could be seen as trying to piggy back on their success!

greenethanol says:

I think its great

dfrye1 says:

I don't see any real issue for me to for others to tag my work. I want it shared with others. I really don't see any serious negative implications.

Helenee says:

I didn't know about 'tagging' and I don't know much more right now - I guess I must first understand what it is exactly, before pronouncing my opinion. On the other hand, I am wondering, why should I be noticed when someone mentions me? When, for example, studenrs write papers using bibliography and quoting authors; when journalists and authors refer to other authors or people or sources - should they send a formal letter, or even a note to the person being mentioned/quoted? Are there any complications that I don't understand here? -- And, of course, yes, it is always nice having people notifying you that they're mentioning your name/work. :-)

MarianaFargasch says:

It's ok and fine by me... want to tag me go right ahead :)

antoivo says:

It`s A complement if people tag my lens`s so i don`t need to be asked permission :)

Starving_Artist says:

nah, it's flattering and I just want to help

davidangel says:

Tag away little squiddies, tag away. The more exposure I get the better, ranks me higher in the search engines.

Important!

Hmmm, another new trick to be aware of . . .

Periodically I enter in 'sousababy' to be sure that ANY lenses authored by others are ones in which I am aware of (like the virtual handshake I explained previously). That is, these lensmasters made mention of me within their original work either in text OR in subtitles (as Gil-the-Great explained).

When I entered myself, sousababy, and chose LENSRANK. The lowest ranked on the 9th page to come up was by someone I have never met, nor endorsed, and (given the topic), I would NEVER visit.

What do you mean sousababy?

Well, I visited this lens and scoured it for reference to me, here is what I found when I looked under:
Related Topics
Hobbies, Games & Toys
My RPG characters
dungeons and dragons
itokealeaf
onni1eye
roleplay
More...

Still baffled, I hit 'More...' and here is what came up:
Related Topics
Hobbies, Games & Toys
My RPG characters

itokealeaf
onni1eye

sousababy

I wonder, how long would anyone get away with this if they put 'Seth Godin' instead of 'sousababy' there?

Thought I'd document this . . .

I think Squidoo should be a fair platform for everyone. YAY!
  • June 5th, 2011 - I have 9 pages now. HUH??? This person is at the bottom once again?? Okay, will report it again . . .
  • June 18th, 2011 - Yay! Now this unethical lensmaster and his or her lens is no longer listed under my name, sousababy.

Wow, I guess this person likes negative attention:

Here' where I found mention of my Squidoo name, still in the Related Tags section (out in full view):

My RPG characters role-playing-games dungeons and dragon sitokealeaf onni1eye roleplay sousababy

Since I cannot name this person to protect his/her rights, I have left off the last tag (as we all know is the author's Squidoo name).

Unethical??

I feel simply putting a lensmaster's name in subtitles is a tad obvious. The association made should be reciprocal. Both parties contributed REAL work on a lens to add to it's quality (in my humble opinion).

My lenses devoted to making Squidoo . . .

Another have your say . . .

Okay, so I guess the factor of social loafing is well in place, bothers some and doesn't bother others. Some (I feel) may not understand the full impact. If you 'tag' someones work (whose lenses are superior in quality, it WILL cause a rise in lensrank for the lesser quality lens . . . eventually. Even if AT FIRST a new lensmaster benefits (briefly) by being tagged by someone seemingly 'higher up'). I suppose this/these lensmaster(s) feel(s) justified by saying, 'Hey, it's okay, you can tag my work too.' Thing is, I have seen what kind of content that one of these lensmasters creates and I don't think I'd want any of my lenses listed under the umbrella of their Squidoo name(s).

Since I JUST discovered a new trick that someone has learned to become 'endorsed' somehow by me, I wonder what your thoughts are about this?

How do you feel about someone completely UNKNOWN to you (and whose work you've NEVER visited) putting your Squidoo name under their Related Topics section?

Loading

I don't like it at all, here's why:

LisaAuch says:

Do you know Rose, you have me scratching my head at this one!....and lost for words, I am going to keep reading, and then I think today I shall play detective, I dont like the sound of all this!? am I too trusting?

sousababy says:

It is not the same, unfortunately, as a lensroll. It DOES affect lensrank, which in turn, affects royalty payments. If I made one half-ass lens and 'tagged' a bunch of purple star lenses or LotD ones (the sole work of others) I would get a big boost in rankings. Lensrolls (now done away with) were supposed to respect other people's work. Featuring someone's work (in a respectful manner) or contributing to someone's work is the fair, ethical way to do this.

Otherwise, why don't we all make a crap lens and just tag hundreds of other people's?

sousababy says:

I have a feeling I am NOT the only one this is happening to. I had to click on 'More' to discover it. Two places to complain are shown in my above pink box. Hope it helps!

Sidther says:

I just went to the lens you describe, it is also weird to me that you are listed just far enough down to have to click "more". When I clicked your name, it took me back to Squidoo search results (for Sousababy on Squidoo) showing only 1 topic that matched.... the link to this person's lens. Is this maybe the same person with a new account? they are level 4... That would really bug me, being in the related topics and having my name lead only to their sales lens.

sousababy says:

I do not even know this person. Why they chose me is a mystery, perhaps they felt I would never discover it? Rather than annoy me, it makes me laugh. Why wouldn't they choose Seth Godin or someone much higher up. This person has given me far too much power here.
The difference between me and him/her is soley this . . . I am honest and I put the best interests of others (always have) ABOVE any money making venture (why I probably will never be rich - ha). Thanks for voting Chris!

It's perfectly fine with me because:

JJNW says:

Still finding this very unclear... *confused*

blackspanielgallery says:

Why not? It is fine with me. We occasionally get lensrolled by others.

Stonecutter says:

I am not sure that Perfectly fine is the way I would describe it. I wouldn't mind as long as there is a sensible reason for it. For example if I write lenses about car repair, and someone with similar lenses put my Squidoo name in there related topics it would make sense, however it wouldn't make sense for someone who writes lenses about gaming to do that. I don't think it would upset me terribly if they did, I just don't understand why they would.

MarianaFargasch says:

I feel honored!

You have some impressive lenses mentioned. I have visited most of these people before coming here. I usually looked at the most active boards and visited as I changed levels after level 60. Unfortunately, that is no longer likely. There is no place to go after 80.

Whew! I'll have to come back and finish, lots of people I love here yet to participate in. This is a wonderful labor of love on your part and certainly has grown. I knew I had been here early on because my favorite was still showing but my like had disappeared, that does happen if we favorite too soon after liking, just have to wait for the "2" to come up. Thank you for contributing to the Sqidoo community in such a wonderfully positive way, I know this was hours of work but I'm guessing that you smiled the whole time!
  • sousababy Apr 19, 2011 @ 1:27 pm | delete
Yes, I did smile the whole time. Thank you for such heartfelt contributions, I must send out a Squid cast. Oh and I once was removed somehow from ChrisDay's Fan Club and he confirmed 'liking' and 'favoriting' a lens of mine (and none of them registered). And I could've sworn I was in YOUR fan club, but just rejoined it again today?! And so yes, there are some bugs, I will have to wait and re-press those buttons too. Thanks for the heads up. Fondly, Rose

Had to come back and finish up, what a joy to visit. I had visited and been visited sometime along the way by everyone here, so it was extra special fun for me. You have met a lot of dear people. Do you know how many times I have read and re-read this lens? I think I finally understand it now.

I have one other question... that I have been wanting to ask but didn't know who to ask... and didn't want to post in a forum. How do you know who recommended you for a purple star? I have 2 purple stars and I would love to say thank you. Also, I recommended someone for a purple star once and she got it! I never told her I recommended her because I don't know the protocol for that, I guess. Nonetheless, is there a way to tell who recommended me for a purple star?

You and Poutine both have a talent that I do not. I am the one who should be honoured and thankful to meet humanitarians like you. Knitting things to help premature babies has been something that I have been aware of (having worked in 4 Toronto-area hospitals) and yet I could never contribute to it. It endears me that you (and others like you) do this fine work - it SAVES lives. What a beautiful way to help our children and our world. Gratefully yours, Rose
