Why is a horseshoe lucky?
I'm not sure who makes the rules on these things but a horseshoe is considered luckiest when it is a found horseshoe. A horseshoe which has been worn by a horse is luckier than a purchased horseshoe which has never previously been used.
One of the reasons that finding a horseshoe was considered lucky is that many horseshoes were made of iron. Iron was a valuable metal back in the old days when money was hard to come by and supplies even more so.
If you stumbled upon an iron horseshoe, you could either re-use the shoe itself, or melt the metal down for creating a brand new metal object. Finding an iron horseshoe was indeed a lucky event as it increased your prosperity.
Of course it was much easier to find a horseshoe back in the old days when everyone traveled by horse, or horse and buggy, and horseshoes got tossed to the side of the road much more often than they do today.

Why is a horseshoe lucky when hung over a door?
There is another reason why the iron of a horseshoe is considered lucky, and it is because fairies, imps, hobgobblins, witches, and other such manner of spirits do not like cold iron and will try with all their might to avoid it.
It is said that hanging a horseshoe over the entrance way door to your home will keep your home safe from these supernatural creatures as they will not pass by the cold iron hanging in the doorway.
Another tale of why hanging a horseshoe above the doorway is considered a way of keeping your home safe from spirits may have originated with a tale of Saint Dunstan and the devil.
Saint Dunstan was originally a blacksmith by trade. He was asked to shoe the devil's horse but instead hammered a shoe onto the devil himself. The devil was in so much pain that he made an agreement with Saint Dunstan in exchange for him removing the shoe. The agreement was that the devil would never enter a home with a horseshoe hanging over the door.
A home without evil spirits within it is therefore a very lucky home indeed.

Which is the right direction to hang a horseshoe?
One of the most common questions relating to a lucky horseshoe is which way to hang the darn thing to insure that it will bring you good luck. Well that all depends on exactly which tale your superstitious nature wishes to believe. Both upright and upside horseshoes are considered to be lucky or unlucky depending upon which culture or person you speak to.
It is believed that hanging a horseshoe with the ends pointing upward will keep the luck held within it. Thereby keeping luck within your home.
It is also believed that one should hang a horseshoe with the ends pointing downward as this will allow the luck to flow out and into your home.
I would guess that all this confusion would mean that you get to choose which method works best for you. So long as you hang your horseshoe over the doorway it should protect you from supernatural spirits no matter which direction you hang the horseshoe in.

- We have a horse, and have several of its shoes hanging around the house, garage and barn. Some are plain, others painted and some were decorated by the kids. Most point upwards to hold the luck inside, though one specially decorated horseshoe hangs with the points downward. Either way, we should be covered!
