Cute cub bear which was glamorized too much. Yet I would give his owners a lot of credit to take his "case" of polar bear and promote conservation of this magnificent animals.

Beautiful and very mnoving story. I actually avoided reading this lens for days because I was afraid of getting too emotional about it, but I'm glad I did. I'm so sorry for your loss. I have a dog named Charlie and his baby (puppy) pictures look just like Knut ... he even looks a little like him grown up. Check out my lens on Care of the Puppy: Your Puppy's First Year for pictures. We even call him our "little polar bear." Here's an Squid Angel Blessing for you (and for Knut too!).

  • jimmyworldstar Jan 1, 2012 @ 6:28 pm | delete
What a cute polar bear, such a shame that he died so unexpectedly. I don't know how they can survive in temperatures that aren't freezing like their home in the Arctic.
  • jadehorseshoe Jan 1, 2012 @ 6:20 pm | delete
He was a fine beast. That human intervention worked imperfectly is a testament to the righteous need of humans to do the right thing. I hope those humans would make the same decision, next time.

Fabulous lens!!!! I loved the part on the polar bears; but I never knew Knut was dead. There was articles about him and i watched a documentary on T.V but never knew he was dead. Im sickened. I followed his progress on YouTube for ages. The pieces you did on him were excellent.
  • ellagis Jun 28, 2011 @ 4:38 pm | delete
I think zoos are horrible places for a wild animal to live in. But.... if only one animal can "sacrify" himself, living in a zoo (the best way possible, of course), and arising attention about the issues of extinction and climate changing, then, I can stand the idea. Like you said in your beautiful lens, Knut was a symbol. That was the important. Of course, I was very sad when I heard that he died....

  • ChrissLJ Apr 10, 2011 @ 3:24 pm | delete
I hadn't realized he had passed on. While I am (very) anti zoos, I believe since we humans are the reason for the problems most of the wild and endangered animals face, it is our responsibility to protect them at all costs. The zoo's choice to "stretch" Knut also saddens me. It's too reminiscent of Napoleon's dogs and horse.

Hi Franster ;o)..I just discovered your posts recently in the aftermath of Knut's death. I am as shocked and unnerved as you. You've done a lovely job of collecting lots of the most well-known photos, footage and history of Knut. He was also my muse for the last 4 years. I also participated with many other people in the internet community who loved him. I miss him dearly but I must admit, I am glad he did not have to grow old in that stony, monotonous enclosure. Now he lives permanantly in the warmth of our hearts. Thank you!

I, too, have followed Knut since his earliest days, and I share your grief at the loss of this extraordinary being. He was noble, and will be missed. I like to think he will shortly be reincarnated to live the life he was meant for; and the life just passed served to make us aware of the plight of polar bears.

Frankie, you did a fine job with this lens, and I congratulate you on LOTD! This lens made me feel good - and yet sad - all at once. There is so much we don't know about our non-human companions on this Earth. Although it is always sad when we witness death - no matter whose - I am grateful that Knut did have some comfort in his short life.

    Nice work!

If the idea to have him stuffed is serious, it is consistent with what I hate about zoos - animals disrespectfully turned into spectacles for our 'pleasure' and for their negative welfare.

'By Friday morning, there were nearly 8,000 entries in the zoo's online memorial book, with several people trying to organize a protest for Saturday morning at the zoo against Knut's display in the museum.'

To everyone who has commented to this lens, thank you. The response has been overwhelming. I am so glad to see how much Knut was loved. I will continue to add info and photos of his short life. Bear hugs, Frankster aka Bearmeister

Great tribute to a the first polar bear celebrity. As he got older though and the world didn't think he was a cute as he was, the media didn't pay as much attention to him. Do you think he died of a broken heart? RIP
  • Frankster Mar 25, 2011 @ 2:10 am | delete
I think he probably missed Thomas Doerflein as any animal would miss someone who raised him with the love Thomas did but I don't think it had anything to do with his death. Bear hugs, Frankster

I am not an animal lover, but I feel empathy for the entire polar bear population. We humans are driving them to their death and their demise on the planet earth. Soon the polar bear will not exist! I want my great grand children to know and see animals such as these. We have to improve our environment so that all creatures may survive. See you around the galaxy...

Nice lens, and sad as well. I read the same comment somewhere about how his death occurred as you quoted, yet in this article it is described differently: http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,752537,00.html - this is a relatively serious German news magazine. And maybe this will comfort you a little ;-) http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,752998,00.html

This breaks my heart... Knut's passing. I appreciate your passion for him and all polar bears. I feel sick every time I see a photo of a polar bear starving and stranded on a tiny slip of ice. Their plight, as impacted by Global Warming, is heavy on my heart these days. We need to be doing more about this. Thanks for keeping this in the public eye.

I don't think a polar bear is made to live in a zoo and else where than in Arctic ocean. I think that most of zoo animals die because their place is NOT in zoos neither in our latitudes. I'd like zoos to become illegal because of this and because they bring lots of money and attract people who don't have the best intentions - how do they capture animals and horrible stories I've read about this!

On the other hand, poor Knut might have died because he got the visit of ugly Leonardo Di Caprio? I would have like to help raise Knut too, but I'm just against putting wild animals in prisons. This is a very sad story and I hope this opens some's eyes and that measures will be taken.

If my charity of choice is Polar Bear International it's also because I want to know that polar bears live in their natural environment and nowhere else.

    Congratulations on your LOTD.
