Book Ratings
Movies have ratings. Books should have ratings too. We should be concerned about everything that we and our children are exposed to. We should also give ourselves and our children a chance to read and enjoy good books whether they are classics or more modern titles.
As an avid bookworm and a member of a religious community, I have in my mind a database of hundreds of books which contain no inappropriate references or themes.
The goal of this lense is to make that list of Good Clean Literature available to the general public. However, since nobody really cares what I think. Ihave devoted my efforts to compiling and evaluating pre-exixting lists. Please take a look at the links below.
In general I feel that the line should be drawn at inappropriately explicit and/or offensive material. I also try to avoid plots based on romantic themes or specific religious beliefs. I have not been as strict about violence but I have tried to avoid excessive gory detail.
As this is a work in progress I welcome your feedback, endorsement and support.
Some Links to people who Care
- Kids-In-Mind: Movie Ratings That Actually Work
- "MPAA ratings are simply too vague, most parents would not agree on what they'd consider offensive material. Some are upset by profanity and nudity, but seem indifferent to violent scenes, while others think that kids will hear all sorts of obscenity at the playground in any case, and so don't mind them listening to actors spewing expletives. We never doubted that Kids-In-Mind would be a hit with parents and other concerned adults. We were surprised, however, to receive support from an unexpected quarter -- the MPAA itself."
- YeshivaNet
- A creative way to limit your internet. Better than any filter, though not practical for everyone.
- Good Clean Books
- A site that has a similar name to mine. They've got the right idea. They do have an overt religious agenda, something that I have tried to avoid.
I was unfamiliar with most of the books listed. I disagree with their listing of 'Dear Mr. Henshaw'. Beverly Cleary is great, but this is one of her worst books. - Amazon.com: "Good CLEAN books that hold you in your seat!"
- A list of Good Clean Classics. I can't vouch for the list, but it looks reasonable.

What I'm thinking
The new Harry Potter: enough
Rowling said her original epilogue was "a lot more detailed, " including the name of every child born to the Weasley clan in the past 19 years... "But it didn't work very well as a piece of writing," Rowling said. "It felt very much that I had crowbarred in every bit of information I could %u2026" (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19959323/) Even in a series as involved and intense as Harry Potter's, there comes a point where enough is enough. While true fans will continue to find hints and foreshadowing, "to every beginning I have seen an end" (King Solomon). The amount of details and clever subplots is finite. At some point the quest for more information must end because there is an end to the information. Lenses for Clean Books

- Hi! I wanted to let you know about another resource for clean books: Squeaky Clean Reads (www.squeakycleanreads.com). My sister and I just launched this website a few weeks ago, and we've had a great response from readers around the world!
Readers can rate and review books in the following areas: violence, profanity, sexual content, mature themes, appropriate age group, and more. We hope you will check it out, and if you like it, perhaps you would consider adding it to your list of resources.
Keep up the good work! We appreciate it! There are millions of readers looking for good, clean books every day. Thanks!

I am a Bookworm and devoutly religious. My books are censored and screened before I read them.
You deserve the same.
