Good insect lights
Safe, non toxic ways to kill bugs outside
Good insect lights are a safe, non toxic way of eliminating bugs in the yard. A lot of people see insect lights as part of their overall pest control strategy. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't know what makes a good insect light.
A good insect light has three crucial qualifications for eliminating and controlling pests. These three qualifications are light spectrum range, method of elimination once the bug is on the trap and placement of the trap. Light spectrum range is the most effective range at which a bug can see a trap. Bugs are naturally attracted to light sources because to the bug it indicates a possible food source and where there is a food source there will also be other bugs and thus a chance to mate. The light source a bug sees well, however, is very specific. A bug will not be attracted to a yellow light source as this is harder for them to see so a fluorescent or traditional bulb is harder for them to make out. Bugs see blue light or even better ultraviolet light sources the best. The closer you can get to a black light, the better.
The method by which the insect light trap kills the insect is also important. A lot of traps use certain chemicals to give off sexually attractive scents to the bugs and some traps use chemicals that poison the bugs once they reach the trap. If chemicals like these are used, they can at times be harmful to children or pets so its best to avoid traps that kill with chemicals if possible. Other traps electrocute the bug when they get close. This can also be harmful as bug body parts go flying when they get zapped. If there is a food source that humans eat nearby, whether in the back yard BBQ or the kitchen, those bug parts can go flying into your hamburger. This is obviously not a very sanitary situation. The best method to trap and kill a bug is to simply trap the bug in a safe, non toxic glue that holds the bug until it starves and dies. The bugs are attracted to the light source but don't see the glue until they run into it. Other traps simply lure the bug into some sort of hole and then use circulating air to suck the bug inside and to the bottom of the trap. The air prevents the bug from flying our and dehydrates the bug at the same time.
Finally, placement of the insect light trap is crucial. Other light sources in the area must be reduced or the trap placed well away from them so as to reduce the chance the bug will be attracted to a normal light and not the trap and thus live to fly to another day%u2026and annoy you. Insect lights should be placed at least 30 to 60 ft away from the edge of the area you are trying to protect.
Now that you know what to look for in a cost effective, non-toxic and safe insect light trap. There are many options for effective insect lights. One of them is the Gardner GT200.
