Good Kung Fu (Movies)

I love Kung Fu movies!

"Your Kung Fu, is really good. But my style is better!!!"

I love Kung Fu and Chinese comedy movies. Why do they always point to their nose instead of their chest when referring to themselves? Why do their lips keep moving when they're done talking? It's hilarious! The slapstick and the dialog also make for great comedy.
I also love the fight sequences, the way momentum swings back and forth from bad guy to good guy until the good guy finally wins. Unless of course the good guy is the master, in which case he dies and it is up to his student to avenge him!
It's not all comedy though, I love the serious films too. I loved Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero. I just saw Ip Man on DVD recently and it was great! I love the fact that it's based on a true story. The choreography was also excellent. No fantastic flying moves, but amazingly fast hand speed and foot work. The success of the movie has spawned a sequel as well as other Ip Man movies.
Watching Kung Fu films is one of the best ways to spend a lazy afternoon.

Wong Fei-Hung

Legendary Kung-Fu Master

Wong Fei HungI hadn't realized that a lot of Kung-Fu movies portray the same person: Wong Fei-Hung. According to Wikipedia he was a martial artist, healer, and hero whose exploits became legend. Famous Wong Fei Hung movies include the Once Upon a Time in China and Drunken Master series of movies. One of the YouTube videos below feature movies depicting Wong Fei-Hung. Read more in this Wikipedia article about the Kung-Fu master.

Famous Actors

Bruce Lee - The real deal. Pioneering martial artist and actor. He is acknowledged to be on of the best fighters of the 20th century. His work brought awareness and popularity of Chinese martial arts to the Western world. More on Wikipedia and IMDB (Internet Movie Database).

Jackie Chan - Who doesn't know Jackie Chan? He's very funny and he does his own stunts. His movies are always fun to watch, the fight scenes are a mix of slapstick and amazingly choreographed moves. There are a lot of websites detailing his life and career. Read more about Jackie Chan on Wikipedia and IMDB.

Sammo Hung - Another one of the greats. I first saw him in a movie with Jackie Chan. Reading about him on the Internet made me realize the depth of his talent and contribution to Asian cinema. Read the Wikipedia and IMDB articles.

Jet Li - Star of Shaolin Temple and the Once Upon a Time in China series of films, where he plays Wong Fei-Hung. My favorite Jet Li movie is Hero. It is loosely based on the assassination attempt on Qin Shi Huang Di, the first Emperor of China. Wikipedia and IMDB.

Donnie Yen - Another prolific actor who has appeared and starred in numerous martial arts films. His most famous work is probably the Ip Man movies, which are semi-autobiographical accounts of Yip Man, Bruce Lee's Wing Chun master. Wikipedia and IMDB

Stephen Chow - Funny actor, lead in one of my favorite comedies, God of Cookery. I also loved Kung Fu Hustle. I haven't seen his other movies but I plan to watch Shaolin Soccer and God of Gamblers. Wikipedia and IMDB

Kwan Tak-Hing - Prolific actor who first played Wong Fei-Hung on film. Kwan Tak-Hing on Wikipedia and IMDB

Yuen Siu-tien - The Drunken Master himself! His Wikipedia and IMDB entries.

Nevermind, I figured it out finally. It wasn't a recipe (that's What's Up Tiger Lilly?) it was a peach. The movie is Kung Phooey.

I have been trying to find a Kung Fu / Martial Arts spoof funny movie I saw awhile back. I don't remember the title, I think that's because cable was messed up and whatever it showed was not what was on. It was about a guy who comes back into town, in California I think... not sure or important to plot. He visits a restaurant he used to frequent, a fight ensues I believe. There is a rival gang wanting a recipe that is hidden in the restaurant. IT's full of campy humor, puns etc. One part that stands out is during a fight. It makes light of how when a group of people are after 1 guy, only 1 engages him at a time. In this scene, the people in the group are taking numbers from one of those red number dispensers. Now fighting number 27. Another part that stands out is where the main guy is - for some reason - teaching a way to remember the great lakes. H O M E S, Heron, Ontario, Michigan, Errie and Superior. There was a warehouse infiltration leading to the past two scenes described. Please help! havingthefun@yahoo.com

Chinese Vampire Movies

What's cooler than hopping mad undead?

Jiang ShiAnother genre of movie I like is the Chinese vampire movie. In the movies, the vampires (called Jiang Shi) wear Qing Dynasty official dress and hop around with their arms outstretched. To defeat them, you need sticky rice, chicken blood, paper, and a Taoist priest.

Here's my Jiang Shi lens.
