I love Kung Fu movies!

"Your Kung Fu, is really good. But my style is better!!!"
I love Kung Fu and Chinese comedy movies. Why do they always point to their nose instead of their chest when referring to themselves? Why do their lips keep moving when they're done talking? It's hilarious! The slapstick and the dialog also make for great comedy.
I also love the fight sequences, the way momentum swings back and forth from bad guy to good guy until the good guy finally wins. Unless of course the good guy is the master, in which case he dies and it is up to his student to avenge him!
Watching these films is one of the best ways to spend a lazy afternoon.

Favorite Movies

My favorites!

  • Drunken Master - Classic!
  • Any movie with fighting Shaolin monks
  • Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Not a comedy, but I loved it!
  • Hero - Another great non-comedy film
  • Kung Fu Hustle - Hilarious!
  • God of Cookery - Not really about Kung Fu, but very, very funny!
  • Bruce Lee movies - Of course!
  • Kung Fu Panda - A Western movie, but still very good.
  • Others I don't know the title of!

Quotable quotes!

Not exactly pick-up lines.

1. Your Kung Fu (pause for effect) is really good! But my style is better!!!
2. So, you've lost again!
3. Snake style!!!
4. Master, when will you teach me real Kung Fu? Shut up and bring me more wine!
5. You killed my master! Now I'm going to kill you!
6. For someone who is a Shaolin monk your Kung Fu is really lousy!
7. I'm bleeding, making me the victor.

Wong Fei-Hung

Legendary Kung-Fu Master

I hadn't realized that a lot of Kung-Fu movies portray the same person: Wong Fei-Hung. According to Wikipedia he was a martial artist, healer, and hero whose exploits became legend. One of the YouTube videos below feature movies depicting Wong Fei-Hung. Read more in this Wikipedia article about the Kung-Fu master.

Kung Pow, a Kung Fu Parody

This is a very funny movie. It has all the elements of a Kung Fu film and is at the same time a parody and a tribute to the genre. Follow the Chosen One as he fights the evil... Betty. PG-13.

Famous Actors

Bruce Lee - The real deal. Pioneering martial artist and actor. He is acknowledged to be on of the best fighters of the 20th century. His work brought awareness and popularity of Chinese martial arts to the Western world. More on Wikipedia and IMDB (Internet Movie Database).

Jackie Chan - Who doesn't know Jackie Chan? He's very funny and he does his own stunts. His movies are always fun to watch, the fight scenes are a mix of slapstick and amazingly choreographed moves. There are a lot of websites detailing his life and career. Read more about Jackie Chan on Wikipedia and IMDB.

Sammo Hung - Another one of the greats. I first saw him in a movie with Jackie Chan. Reading about him on the Internet made me realize the depth of his talent and contribution to Asian cinema. Read the Wikipedia and IMDB articles.

Jet Li - Star of Shaolin Temple and the Once Upon a Time in China series of films, where he plays Wong Fei-Hung. My favorite Jet Li movie is Hero. It is loosely based on the assassination attempt on Qin Shi Huang Di, the first Emperor of China. Wikipedia and IMDB.

Stephen Chow - Funny actor, lead in one of my favorite comedies, God of Cookery. I also loved Kung Fu Hustle. I haven't seen his other movies but I plan to watch Shaolin Soccer and God of Gamblers.

Kwan Tak-Hing - Prolific actor who first played Wong Fei-Hung on film.
