you're right nick about the hindu tradition. but this symbol was misused by the nazis as their political symbol against the jews. we don't want monarch13 and squidoo to be in a difficult situation.

I found this lens fascinating! I have always been interested in symbols of good luck. The only two that made me frown were the 2 animal parts... rabbit's foot and alligator teeth. Sad that countless creatures had to die so that people could claim their "lucky parts." I know you are doing your job of researching and reporting, though... And I loved this lens!!

What a luck to find this great lens! I remember so many cottage houses in the village my family used to spend summers where locals had horseshoes above the main entrance door. Other than that, in my country four leaf clover is the most common symbol of good luck.

I believe we create our own luck, by Working and Playing Hard to live the life we crave.
You know the old saying, "The harder I work, the luckier I get", and if you're following your passions in life then you're work is your play - can't get much luckier than that.

I love ladybugs, and keep one with a magnet on my fridge. I found it just after my marriage fell apart and I had moved into a new place it was left by the previous owners on a window sill in the basement and instantly I knew everything was going to be alright... I also am having a wedding next year with the "Love of my life and soulmate" and our wedding theme is "Lucky In Love" and contains four leaf clovers... I have written articles on both of those subjects... Love your lens, big thumbs up!!

    Cool facts.
I had heard from a friend who was raised in Hong Kong that the Elephant is only considered lucky if the trunk is pointing up. It's supposed to be unlucky if it is down. To this day I won't buy an elephant figurine unless it's trunk is up, just in case.

This is a very interesting lens. I think that people find it quite comforting to think objects bring them good luck.

A little silver owl I had bought in Greece when I was a kid. I wore it with a necklace during each exam and test I did at school, and I still do when I have an important working meeting. I don't really think it brings good luck, but it is almost a personal tradition.

Neat lens! My oldest daughter loves Ladybugs so I've always been partial to them so to speak.

With that said, I didn't fully realize that Ladybugs were considered good luck. I've always been intrigued when they land on you randomly as it does seem like someone or something is reaching out to you in a good way. In fact, I was on a job yesterday and accidentally swatted away at what I thought was a bug only to realize it was a Ladybug. And, my first inclination was, "oh know, that was a Ladybug!".

Again, very nice lens and great information regarding the various good luck signs / symbols!

I heard interesting anecdote about Niels Bohr (Nobel Prize winner in in Physics). It has several versions, but the main point is allways the same. Here it goes:
One day a visitor to Niels Bohr's country cottage noticed a horseshoe hanging on a wall and teased the eminent physicist about his apparent fuckingstition. "Can it be," he asked, "that you, of all people, believe it will bring you luck?" "Of course not," Bohr replied, "but I understand it brings you luck whether you believe it or not."

Luck is real, but naturally your luck depends on your mood. People in bad moods tends to have a worst day than people who start thier day off in a good mood. Even going to sleep on negative thoughts will result in you hurting yourself in the morning or even something worst than that!

What an interesting lens. I had no idea that alligator teeth were considered good luck by some...funny. I know that I don't consider acorns good luck. Those darn things are a menace when you have 3 or 4 big oak trees in the back yard. I have spent a lot of time pulling up little oak trees and sharpening lawn mower blades that have been forced to deal with them. 5*

I heard a different story for the history of the lucky rabbits foot. I heard that it is rooted in an African belief that carrying the foot of any animal helps you to be able to flee with the speed of that animal. Rabbits are fast, and so once the notion came across the Atlantic (on slave ships) it was directly mostly upon the rabbit. I don't remember where I read that, though, or how accurate it is.

Excellent job! I noticed something about what you listed as well. The symbols you listed often coincide with the personalities of people I know who collect them.

My youngest loves ladybugs - You said: will brighten your day, give you patience with those around you, and most importantly, lessen your burdens. Which describes youngest to a T.

My oldest collects frogs - You said: friendship and abundance (Her teacher once described her as a quiet leader, she was able to lead people just by being a friend. She isn't quite 16, so I'll let you know on the fertility in about 10 yrs. Yikes!

It is my understanding that Ganesh is also considered to bring good fortune. ChrisKelly has an interesting point about lucky socks - people consider clothing they wore or objects they had with them during a good event in life can carry a special power to bring about another good event. I find it fascinating to consider why one thing is considered to conjure up good fortune when another doesn't have the same power or - heaven forbid - an object brings misfortune. Thanks for the list: I didn't know there were so many was to bring good luck!

This is quite an impressive collection of good luck. There were some I didn't know yet. Thanks for putting this list together. Added my Blessing and hope it brings me luck as well! ^:)^

I have often put acorns on the windowsill for decoration in the fall but never realized it could be good luck.

Such a big list, and put together so well!

Not only a fantastic idea for a lens, but I loved the way you organized and designed it! Giant Squid status indeed.

So is it good luck if you're born on the extra day in Leap Year?

What a superb idea for a lens.

My favorite good luck thing is the lady bug.
I also have a few of them in my collection.

What a truly remarkable lens! My personal charms are a little elephant (for Ganesha, who I swear saved me from drowning in the Lombok Straits) and a 4 leaf clover. Each evening I watch the bats fly over my house and cross my fingers for good fortune. One thing though, I regard the ladder, when it forms a triangle against a wall, as being of immense good luck as it's a female symbol of great power just as number 13 is the female number. Thanks for this wonderful 5* lens and I look forward to all of your work. Thanks for adding this to the All Legends and Lore group.

Despite all the beliefs of 13 being unlucky, a child born on the 13th of any month is said to LUCKY in all of their ventures in life.

My favorites are the 4 leaf clover - I have one in my wallet - and elephants - I have an elephant collection - yes, trunks up! My husband carries a buckeye in his pocket at all times for good luck. Super lens idea and great lens. A fun read! Congratulations on being featured on Squidoo Lens Reviews.
