About Alaska

The earliest inhabitants of Alaska crossed the Bering land bridge from Asia about 20,000 years ago and spread southward. The earliest Europeans arrived about 260 years ago. Alaska was first sighted by Vitus Bering, a Danish explorer, in 1741 on a voyage from Siberia. The earliest foreign settlement was established by Russian whalers and fur traders on Kodiak Island in 1784.

There are about 627,000 residents of Alaska, according to the 2000 census report. Alaska's land mass is 571,951 square miles, about 2.3 times the size of Texas and about 1/6 the size of the Lower 48 states.

Alaska has more than 3,000 rivers and over 3 million lakes. The longest river is the Yukon, which flows through 1400 miles in Alaska and 900 miles in Canada.

Mount McKinley, 20,320 feet high, is the tallest mountain on the North American continent. Seventeen of America's 20 tallest mountains are in Alaska.
