E. coli Fears Cause 5 Million Pizza Recall

Seattle Times article / Associated Press

Reported in the Seattle Times - Friday, Nov. 2, 2007.
5 million frozen pizzas recalled over E. coli fears
The Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS - General Mills on Thursday recalled about 5 million frozen pizzas sold nationwide under the Totino's and Jeno's labels because of possible E. coli contamination.

The problem may have come from pepperoni on pizzas produced at a General Mills plant in Ohio, the suburban Minneapolis-based company said. It said the pepperoni itself came from a separate supplier, and was not produced at the plant itself.

The voluntary recall covers pizzas containing pepperoni that have been produced since July, when the first of 21 E. coli illnesses under investigation by state and federal authorities emerged.

Nine of the 21 people reported eating Totino's or Jeno's pizza with pepperoni topping before becoming ill. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said eight people have been hospitalized, and four have developed kidney failure.

The company asks consumers to throw away recalled pizzas. A list of the recalled products can be found on the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service Web site at www.fsis.usda.gov.

Cutting the Bureaucracy by Cutting Prison Chaplains?

Does cutting prison Chaplains equate cutting bureaucacy?

The Department of Corrections has cut eight chaplain positions and now employs only 16 to serve more than 15,000 inmates housed in Washington prisons. This move is part of Governor's plan in eliminating 1,000 middle managers from state payrolls.

The remaining chaplains who serve in the prisons are stretched so thin that they can't provide vital services: protecting prisoners' rights as well as helping create a safer prison environment and reduce the number of convicted felons who re-offend when they get out of prison.

Governor Gregoire Signs Landmark E-Recycling Bill
Bill will allow Washington consumers to recycle computers and televisions for free

OLYMPIA - Governor Chris Gregoire today signed into law a measure that will allow Washington consumers to recycle their old computers, monitors and televisions at no cost (SB 6428).

"This bill puts our market-based economy to work for the environment," said Governor Gregoire. "It's a responsible step in the best interests of the public, because no matter who owns the equipment at the end of its life, it will be recycled - free of charge."

Used and unwanted computers, monitors and televisions contain materials that can be recovered and reused, but if simply discarded they can release hazardous substances into the environment. This bill creates a system to collect, recycle and properly dispose of these items.

Household consumers, schools, charities, small governments and small businesses will be able to dispose of their used products without charge. The cost of the program will be distributed among the manufacturers.

The Governor issued a partial veto on the bill, on Section 26, which would have restricted the export of e-waste to certain other countries. The federal government, not Washington, has the authority to restrict these exports.

For information on all bill action, please visit Governor Gregoire's website or the Washington Legislature website.

SALMON IN THE NEWS

If the salmon are not doing well, our watersheds are not doing well - and neither are we," said Governor Gregoire.

Fifteen salmon species, covering 75 percent of Washington, are listed under the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA). The Hood Canal
Summer Chum Draft Recovery Plan is part of a larger statewide strategy to support locally developed recovery plans in response to the ESA listings. Local organizations from five other areas in Washington have developed similar draft recovery plans - lower Columbia, mid-Columbia, Snake River, upper Columbia and Puget Sound.

"Salmon are icons of our Northwest culture and the foundation for the health of our watersheds. If the salmon are not doing well, our watersheds are not doing well - and neither are we," said Governor Gregoire. "Up until now, the focus has been on getting these plans done. Now we need to move forward and emphasize getting these plans implemented on the ground."

Regional Recovery Plans are made for the following:

Puget Sound Region Chinook
Hood Canal Summer Chum
Lower Columbia Region
Middle Columbia Region
Upper Columbia Region
Snake River Region
