Use The Scientific Method
The first and most important thing you should understand is, the main purpose of a science project is not to get the right answer, the purpose of a Science Fair project is that you go through the process of asking questions and performing experiments in an attempt to find answers. It is what you learn during the whole experiment that is important. This means that for a good science fair project you have to make proper use of the "Scientific Method." You cannot do a good science fair project without following this method. In short the basic steps of the scientific method are:
- Research
- Purpose
- Hypothesis
- Experimentation
- Conclusion
If you are still worried about your science fair project, why not have a look at Elementary School Science Project Here you will get 47 complete projects, ready for you.
Where do I start?
1. Choosing a topic:The starting point for a good science fair project is to find a topic that you are really interested in. If you are interested in your topic the chances are far better that you will be successful and do a winning science fair project. This is where a really good science e-book will come in handy. It does not mean you have to do the experiments exactly as in the book but, it will set you thinking and give you ideas. In a good e-book you are sure to get an idea that interests you.
2. Research:
You have to research your topic in order to be able to formulate your purpose and your hypothesis. It is impossible to find a topic for a good science fair project without doing some research in advance. Once again, a good e-book will be able to help you here. Much of the information you need will be available in the book and that will save you a lot of time.
3. Purpose:
This is where you make a statement about the problem, or question, that you are going to try and get an answer to. You can now see why you have to do a little research to start with. You will not be able to formulate a problem or a question if you do not know a little of the topic.
4. Hypothesis:
Here you make a guess about the answer you think you will get to the problem. Here you have to know a little about the topic to be able to formulate your hypothesis. Remember it is most important to write down your hypothesis. Whether you prove yourself to be right or wrong is not important and you must not change this during the project. You can have a very good science fair project even if your hypothesis is wrong.

This is the process where you start testing your hypothesis. Here safety is of the utmost importance and it is best to do your experiments under adult supervision. Using a good science fair projects e- book can make this step much safer as you'll knowthe steps and the book will also warn you of all the possible dangers. If you want to deviate from the book, do so with the utmost care, please, do not take any chances. We do not want your fun to be spoiled by an accident.
Here it is important to mention that when you do your experiment, you must always have a control against which to measure your results. You have to have something to measure the results of your changes against. Do not worry, if this is Greek to you, a good e-book will help you there as well.
6. Conclusion:
This is where you give a summary of all the results of your experiments. You have to show how the results are related to your purpose and this is where you give reasons if your hypothesis was wrong. Remember, it is not important whether your hypothesis was right or wrong. What is important here is how you went about the project and whether you followed the correct scientific method.

- A narrow bottle
- Water
- Food coloring
- Scissors
- A clear straw
- Adhesive (in South Africa we will call it Presstick)

How to do this experiment:
- First you have to pour water that has been colored by the food coloring into your bottle until it is about 2/3 full.
- Now you have to dip the straw into the water and seal the neck of your bottle with the adhesive.
- Blow air into the straw to force extra air into the bottle
- You will notice that after a while the higher air pressure in the bottle will force the water level to rise in the straw.
- Take the card and carefully attach it to the straw
- With your felt-tipped pen, mark the water level at room temperature
- Now place your thermometer in the sun for about 15 minutes
- You will notice that the water level has rise, mark the level with your felt tipped pen
- Now you place your thermometer in the fridge for about 15 minutes
- You will notice that the water level has decrease, mark the level with your felt tipped pen
- Why did the water level rise in the sun and decrease in the fridge?
- It might be a good idea to take photos of your work as you go for your display
