Why Is There A Lens On Vacuum Cleaner?

First of all, I need to tell everybody and I am not a vacuum cleaner expert. The hose of my old vacuum cleaner broke into 2 and I need to buy a new vacuum cleaner. That is why I have created this lens.

Before this lens was up, I have got no idea what to look for when you want to buy a vacuum cleaner. Everything look the same to me on the outside except for their prices. Vacuum cleaner prices can range from less than a hundred to a few thousands. There must be something different in these vacuum cleaners. So which one should I get?

I hate my old vacuum cleaner. It has very good suction power, struck onto my floor and you need great strength to pull it out. It does not have suction control, no additional nozzles, make noises loud enough for my neighbors staying in the next block to know that I am vacuuming my house.

Below is a big list of things for you to consider when buying a vacuum cleaner for your house. I have also included some links to different brand of vacuum cleaners. Hope that you will find a vacuum cleaner that suit your budget and needs.

Type Of Vacuum Cleaners

There are several type of vacuum cleaners in the market. I have added pictures to each type of vacuum cleaner so that you will get a better idea of how each vacuum cleaner look like. As pictures speak louder than words, I have also added some links to show examples of each type of vacuum cleaner.

Things to Consider When Buying a Vacuum Cleaner

* Does it clean the air when you are vacuuming the room?
* Does it gives out hot dirty air when you are doing the vacuuming?
* What is your budget?
* How many year guarantee will you like to have?
* If parts of the vacuum cleaner is spoilt or wear off, is it easy to get replacement?
* Are the replacement expensive?
* Can it reach the ceiling for spider webs?
* Do you have family members that are allergic to the environment?
* How much electricity does your vacuum cleaner use?

Robotic Vacuum Cleaner

Do you want your vacuum cleaner to move by itself? Some robotic vacuum cleaner will just do that. All you need to do is to press a button and you can leave your house. You will come back to see a clean house.

Well, some robotic vacuum cleaner do not even need you to press a button. You will have to let the vacuum cleaner know when you will like to do the cleaning and the vacuum cleaner will start the vacuuming when it is time to do so. Some even wash the floor for you. Sound great?

I have brought iRobot Roomba 4230 Remote Scheduler Robotic Vacuum in November 2006. I hardly had time for housework when I was nursing my newborn baby. What makes thing worst was that I have 2 cats who were shedding their fur like nobody business. My iRobot was a good helper. It goes around my house once a day and it keeps my house . I was sane and happy.

I have quit using my robotic vacuum cleaner and switch to a canister vacuum cleaner instead. My robotic vacuum cleaner is not suitable for my house anymore because my son likes to leave his toys all over the house. Here are some picture of my iRobot when it first arrive at my house.

The Vacuum Cleaner Filter

Questions you need to ask about the filter.

* How many filters does the vacuum cleaner use?
* How well it filters the air from the vacuum cleaner?
* Is the filter(s) washable?
* If not, how often we need to replace?
* How much each fliter cost?
* Is the filter easily available from your place?

The Power Cord

You will need to plug and unplug each time you vacuum a room if your power cord is too short. Check how big is your house and estimate a length that you will feel comfortable with. If the power cord is too long, it will get struck in some furniture and you will have problems moving your vacuum cleaner too.

The Nozzles

The type of flooring you have determine the type of nozzles you will need. You may need to pay extra attention to the type of nozzles if you have parquet flooring. Take note of the wheel too. Your nozzles might not stretch your flooring but the wheels of the vacuum cleaner might. Some other vacuum cleaners may come with other nozzles which can be used for sucking mattresses, curtains, carpets, rugs, sofa and even hard to reach corners or dusting brushes for smooth surface such as your television and table top.

Suction Power

Some vacuum cleaners allow you to adjust their suction power. This is a very useful feature because you can have a stronger suction for dirty floor and gentle suction for curtains.

However, the stronger the suction power, the noisier the vacuum cleaner makes.

Noise Level

If you have a baby in the house and you can only do your vacuuming after your baby is sleeping, you may want to take note of the noise level your vacuum cleaner makes. 76 db(A) is around the average noise level. Check out some quiet vacuum cleaners here.

Dust Bag, Bagless or Water Based

There are 2 type of dust bags, the disposable type or washable type.

There are salesman that show you broken dust bag and said that they are so troublesome to clean. Personally, I have never broke a dust bag although I make sure that they are 90% full before throwing the bag away. In fact I love vacuum cleaner with disposable dust bag because all you need to do is throw them away and put in a new one. Washable dust bag are thicker than disposable one but you got to clean them when they get full.

Some user said that once the dirt starts to accumulate in the dust bag, the suction power starts to drop. I did not experience a drop of suction power in my old vacuum cleaner too, however, I am not sure if it apply to other vacuum cleaner a not.

Another point to note is that the hot air that the dust bag vacuum cleaner gives out may not be cleaner than the water based type because you do not clear the dust in them until they get full.

The only thing I do not like about vacuum cleaner that comes with a dust bag is that you got to buy the dust bags when you have run out of dust bag. If you prefer a vacuum cleaner with a bag, do check the cost of the dust bag? Are they easily available or you got to travel to the other end of the country to get them? You might have to consider stocking up dust bag just in case your nearby shop or the supplier decided to discounting the dust bags.

For bagless vacuum cleaners you can choose to dispose the dirt after every cleaning or wait till it is fuller.

Which do you prefer?

What do you prefer? A vacuum cleaner that comes with a disposable or washable bag or one without a bag?

Bag

draik says:

I prefer a vacuum cleaner that comes with a disposable bag so that I can easily replace the bag when it is full. I do not need to wash anything after all that vacuuming.

Weight of the vacuum cleaner

A water-based/wet vacuum cleaner with water inside is heavier than a dry one. Try to carry the vaccum cleaner and see if it is manageable for you. Some product warranties do not cover parts like the handle so if you have a heavy vacuum cleaner and a flimsy handle, be prepared to pay for the repair if it breaks so ask what the manufacturer covers. Check out what are the light weight vacuum cleaners available.

Wet, Dry Vaccum Cleaner

A wet vacuum cleaner can suck up liquid like juice spillages or a damp bathroom floor whereas a dry vacuum cleaner is purely for dry dirt. Now which one do you need? A wet vacuum cleaner, a dry one or one with both feature?

    Very informative and helpful lens! I have a Roomba too, and don't use it more than once a week because of all the picking up that is required ahead of time!

    Good lens; I am thinking about replacing my vacuum cleaner. Have you read about any vacuums that are better for families with someone who has long hair?
