About caricatures
I have been drawing caricatures of people for 20 years. Up until about 3 years ago, it was more of a sideline than an actual profession. All of that changed once I attended my first NCN caricature convention. The NCN stands for the National Caricaturist Network. It's a trade association for artists who love to draw exaggerated faces.
Once I attended my first convention, my whole life changed. I saw just how talented many of these artists are. I learned how many have made a business out of it by selling their work at theme parks and zoos. I realized for the first time that my skillset wasn't just sideshow entertainment. I realized that caricature illustration was a true artform. I am still learning more and more about it daily. My hope is to help educate the public on what it is that makes this unique artform so special.

- Albert Hirschfeld (June 21, 1903 - January 20, 2003) was an American caricaturist, best known for his simple black and white satirical portraits of celebrities and Broadway stars. Hirschfeld's art style is unique, and he is considered to be one of the most important figures in contemporary caricature, having influenced countless cartoonists. Hirschfeld's caricatures are almost always drawings of pure line, with simple black ink on white paper, with little to no shading or cross-hatching. - Stephen Silver
- Aspiring to be a professional artist my whole life, I first got involved in drawing at the age of six when I found an artist's original sketchbook laying in my back yard. From that point on I knew that drawing would be my purpose in life. In 1992 I got my professional start drawing caricatures at amusement parks and then went on to establish my own illustration business and caricature concession company called Silvertoons. In 1996 I was hired as a graphic designer for the clothing company "No Fear". Then, in 1997 was hired at Warner Bros. Television Animaton as a character designer and have been working in the animation industry ever since. I enjoy the art of character design so much, that I have also gone on to teach the art form part time. I believe there are three treasures to success in life: Determination, Passion and Desire. These are the three rules I live by, thereby giving me what it takes to keep on drawing. I hope my artwork inspires you, like so many other artists works have inspired me.

I've been a member of the NCN since 1993, and I'd like to say that old guys like me (I've been drawing caricatures since the 1950s) are inspired by the enthuiasm and collegiality of the younger fellows (and women). I've attended five of the conventions and have enjoyed learning a lot about the art! Posted October 27, 2006 |
