How to Set Up a New Domain Name with Googles Apps

If you're like me, you love building Squidoo lenses.

But after a while, it's tough keeping track of them all. And difficult telling people how to find one on the web, because the URLs (Uniform Resource Locators, aka: web site addresses) are usually long. Kind of weird. And a pain to type into the browser.

Grouping several related lenses together under one memorable domain name makes word-of-mouth marketing & promotion a lot easier. Just give out one well-thought-out domain name. And users have access to several Squidoo lenses from that one web page.

Google Apps for your Domain makes this a snap.

This 11-chapter ebook describes the basic concepts behind building professional-looking multi-lens projects -- ebooks, extended tutorials, department stores, shopping malls, and more -- using Squidoo and Google Apps for your Domain.

Here's How I Register a Domain Name with Google Apps

Google Apps for your Domain comes in 3 Versions: Standard, Premier & Education.

I select the FREE Standard Version, and do a search for an available domain name. When I find the right name, Google Checkout concludes the registration and $10 sale with two or three fast clicks. (Other payment options available, too.)

Another click takes me to my domain-name dashboard, where most applications have already been configured. Within an hour, GMail and Google Talk are usually ready to go.

Needless to say, the whole process of setting up your own domain is incredibly easy. The toughest part is finding a memorable name that's still available.

The $10 (for 1 year) includes the Domain by Proxy, which means that whenever anyone looks up my domain in WHOIS at Network Solutions, they see 'Domain by Proxy' instead of my name, address and email. Helps avoid spammers getting my email address.

Registering your new domain through Google saves some money, too.

Google uses the services of GoDaddy.com for domain name registration. GoDaddy usually charges $8.95 for domain registration. And another $8.95 for the privacy. So you save about $8 with Google.

Plus, you can still manage all your domain business through GoDaddy, although you'll go through a Google-branded doorway to reach the GoDaddy servers.

You can also set up your domain name to renew automatically every year through Google. And they continue to charge only $10/year with privacy (Domains by Proxy).

What If You Already Have a Perfectly Good Domain Name?

You can use a pre-existing domain name with Google Apps.

But you'll need to know something about the DNS (domain name system) and the related MX records, NS records, IP addresses and so on. Not real difficult, but it can be time-consuming for non-technical people.

Here's a taste of what you'll need to know, if you want to do the Google Apps technical configurations yourself.

Brainstorming More Options for Registering a Domain Name

You could use your domain name to...
  • direct or point a visitor directly to a single Squidoo lens.

  • create 1 or more CNAMEs* to direct or point a visitor to individual Squidoo lenses (one CNAME per lens).

  • combine several of your related lenses to make an online book or an extended tutorial.

  • combine several of your related lenses to create a web site that describes different facets of your business.

  • combine several of your selling lenses to make a department store or mall.

  • combine related lenses from 2 or more lensmakers to create a powerful sales, training or resource web site.
FOR EXAMPLE: I have a lens called Green Home. I could partner with several other 'Green' lensmakers to create a comprehensive 'Green' web site made with Squidoo lenses.

* A CNAME is a derivative or a customization of your domain name. The www. before your domain name is a CNAME. BLOG in blog.domainname.com is a CNAME for domainname.com.
