How to Use Google Apps' GMail with Squidoo

google gmail logo

Once I had built several related lenses about Las Vegas, I realized that my personal email address didn't fit.

I needed an email address that matched the professional content I put into my lenses.

Google Apps for your Domain with GMail was all I needed.

This 11-chapter ebook describes the basic concepts behind building professional-looking multi-lens projects -- ebooks, extended tutorials, department stores, shopping malls, and more -- using Squidoo and Google Apps for your Domain.

Here's How I Use GMail with Squidoo

For a professional image, the email address should use the domain name.

This is what I call a branded email account, versus an email address that bears no relationship to the domain name.

In my case, my brand is: 'First Time In Las Vegas' (FirstTimeInLasVegas.com).

All I did was create a new user account -- in this case the primary administrator account -- with an email address. Google does all the configuration automatically.

I then opened a new user account with Squidoo using the branded email address. And transferred all the lenses from my old account to the new account.

Taking this process one step further, Google Apps lets me create 200 user accounts, and therefore 200 email addresses on this domain. So I could get very creative:
  • Info@FirstTimeInLasVegas.com
  • Sales@FirstTimeInLasVegas.com
  • WebMgr@FirstTimeInLasVegas.com
  • CustomerService@FirstTimeInLasVegas.com
NOTE: none of these are valid email addresses for me; just examples only.

Bottom line: now the domain name and email address(es) work together. And they're easy to remember, because they're all built around the brand name: First Time in Las Vegas.

Brainstorming More Options for Using GMail

With Google Apps & GMail, you can...
  • add automatically at the end of every email a custom signature block for promoting your web site.

  • create several branded email accounts, so each email captures a specific type of inquiry (e.g.: one address gets all requests for technical assistance, while another gets all requests for more product information; or create an email address for each different kind of product: t-shirts@..., hats@..., books@..., etc.).

  • route several email addresses to one master email address for easy monitoring and management; you can even respond to messages using different email addresses from the same main account.

  • set up labels and filters to sort incoming messages into categories and automate a range of actions/responses based on message content/characteristics.

  • create a domain-branded email address and open a new Squidoo account with the intent that 2 or more people can use the same email address (and password) to collaborate on the same lens(es).

  • set up several Google Alerts related to the content of your lenses, and have the alerts sent to one of your GMail accounts on a daily basis; use the Search feature in GMail to retrieve leads from the alerts.
