How to Use Page Creator with Squidoo

google page creator logo

Once I had my domain name and GMail address, I could promote my Squidoo lenses with a single easy-to-remember URL, rather than a bunch of odd URLs that represented my Squidoo lenses.

I also wanted to give people some background about why I created the lenses, if they happened to be interested. What benefit visitors could get using my web site. And an easy way for them to find what they needed fast.

Using Google Apps for your Domain and Page Creator makes setting up home pages really easy.

This 11-chapter ebook describes the basic concepts behind building professional-looking multi-lens projects -- ebooks, extended tutorials, department stores, shopping malls, and more -- using Squidoo and Google Apps for your Domain.

Here's How I Use Page Creator with Squidoo

Page Creator is a template-driven web page/site builder.

After reviewing the pre-designed templates -- there are more than 40 templates -- I select a simple white design, mainly because I'm color-blind to certain colors. I know this because almost everyone is horrified at my selection of colors. (It's so bad, I have someone help me buy all my clothes for a year, so they all match, no matter what I decide to wear.)

I try to add a bit of color, such as the Squidoo colors, because I know a professional designer picked them out.

Basically, the Page Creator editor functions like a word processor -- very much like the editor in Blogger. You just click on a section of the page, and enter your text. The template also accepts photos, links, and Google Gadgets, as well as some simple HTML tags (tables, text formatting, etc.).

Page Creator lets you store up to 100MB of pages AND files (photos, graphics, HTML, documents, sound FX, etc.) for download. I use this capability on my Las Vegas Organic Food lens.

Google seems to index the pages fairly soon after the page is published. And setting up the Table of Contents on the Home page means visitors click back to the web page to navigate to other pages, and Google sees a good flow of inbound and outbound traffic.

If you use Google AdWords to drive traffic to your site/lenses, you can set up multiple pages to create a different landing page for each AdWords keyword, each product, each AdWords project, etc.

Watch Out for Some Page Creator Limitations

Be aware that Google's Page Creator...
  • sometimes allows the cursor to disappear completely, while editing the HTML tags.

  • could lose your changes, if your internet connection gets interrupted in the middle of editing the page; keep your HTML code in a Notepad (or similar text editor) TXT file, then copy and paste the HTML into the Page Creator editor; save immediately.

  • has no way (that I know of) to place a page description and keyword list in the HEAD section of these web pages.

  • displays your pure domain name only on the Home page; all other pages default to a bizarre cryptic hybrid URL built on your domain name. However, you should be able to delete the "-a.googlepages.com" from the URL, and the remaining URL text should work as a link to your page.

  • offers no native support for: CSS (style sheets); pages designed in 3rd-party web design software; access to the HEAD section of the template; and other limitations. However, the How to for Advanced Users section of the Page Creator Discussion Group has posts outlining some very creative solutions.
NOTE: Access to the Google Page Creator Discussion Group is free, but requires a Google Account.

Great lens. I have recently tried out Google Page Creator and even a complete novice like me managed to put together a reasonable website. See my lens here to read about my efforts to do this.
