Google decided to go the Bing route and began to insert background images to their homepage. A lot of have Google as our default page since we loved it's clean, clutter-free white background that Google has sported since it's inception.
Now they offer these annoying background images but worse, they do not give you the option of "opting out" and sticking with the old clean look background.

Remove Google Background Image
How to remove the Google Background Image
Google has not offered an easy way to remove the background image but here are some things you can try:
-- Change your home page to: http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=all
Make sure to click on the left bottom corner "Remove background image" link.
-- Change your home page to Google's SSL URL: https://www.google.com
Make sure you have the "s" at the end of http!
-- You can disable javascript on the Google page
-- If you're using Firefox use the Greasemonkey addon:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748/
Which has a script to remove the background image from Google:

Google posted on their blog that this is a 24-hour promotion of their Google Wallpaper feature so soon it should be back to normal. :-)
