The New Google Machine - Running Google Chrome OS

I really, really want a Google Chromebook. The Chromebook has been previously known as the Google cr-48 and Cali Lewis quite logically called it the Cloudbook. I actually really like that name - it's too bad they didn't use it. They should've called Cali! ;-)

95% of what I do is online, and I really don't think it would be that difficult to move the last 5% to the cloud. Okay, maybe it's not really 95%, but, it's awfully close. And the little bit that I do offline, I'd rather be doing online. I've been so afraid of computer crashes lately, that moving my life to the cloud - and maybe some pics offline, on CD's or whatever - sounds more and more appealing to me. I really think that this machine and I could get along very nicely.

I don't know. I could be wrong. I could be dead wrong. I could possibly hate the thing and feel claustrophobic ...tied into a box, if you will. But I do think it's a groundbreaking thing, either way, and a lot of people will love this new way of computing.

I think I'll be one of them. I'm not entirely sure, but, it's very possible.

The Chrome OS experiment: 2 weeks with Google's new Chrome computers
I used Google's Cr-48 test notebook for months and then turned my attention to the first commercial Chromebooks upon their launch last May. After reviewing the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook, I was impressed enough to buy one of my own; I still use it ...

On the software front, the new Chromebook featured the much talked about Auro windows manager which enhances the user experience [read out Auro review here]. The new UI which I have been using on my cr-48 enhances the user experience manifold.

What do you think of this new Google-centric, web-centric machine?

Are you wanting to try one?

Do you know anyone who was in the pilot program to try these out for free?

I'd really like to have one.

I definitely would, too. I think it would be interesting to see if I could be all about the cloud.

We're finally seeing preorder pages and waiting lists and so forth. I have to say I'm a bit surprised by the price tag, I thought they would be much less expensive.

I've really let the ball drop on my research and keeping an eye on things. Will have to get back into the fray, for sure! I'm not surprised they're expensive, though. Put three big companies together and whaddya get? LOL

I hope they don't go with the Atom processor. I've read its a crawler ... but I'll wait for the official release and reviews to decide. Thanks for the preview and heads up on pending release.

Ok, you will definitely sound like you know more than I - so I'll stick with you! ;-)

You're quite welcome for the heads up!

I have one of these from the pilot program. The pilot version is pretty slow, with not enough ram and oomph for my liking, and no way to upgrade it. The "real" ones coming out might not have that issue, however. Other than that, and the lack of a way to save anything locally, which is sometimes necessary, it's pretty decent. Definitely has a use for some people, but not for everyone.

I'm so excited to hear from one of the pilot program participants! (tongue twister alert!) Thanks so much for filling us in on your experiences! Is the machine you received 'it' - like they're not going to send participants the 'final version' machines? Do you know?
