Adwords Conversion Tracking 

Are you using Google Adwords to promote your product or service? Are you getting the results you want? You'll only know this information if you are tracking the conversion rates of the click-through you are paying for. Then, depending on what you learn about the conversions, you may need to refine your campaign.


A conversion rate is defined as the percentage of people who actually purchase your product or service compared to the number of people who came to your website by clicking on your Adwords ad. This number is the conversation percentage and the higher the percentage, the more effective your ad campaign. If you have extremely low numbers, you need to do something to increase those numbers such as refine your ads or choose better keywords or websites for displaying the ads.


Google provides inside the Adwords application a tool for tracking conversions for each campaign and each ad you run. This allows you to learn what your rates are and see which ads are doing their job well. If one ad or a whole campaign isn't doing well, then you can look for patterns that can clue you in about how to change and make the campaign more effective.


Adwords conversions are driven by many factors. It is not sufficient of your ad to get the user to click through to your website, although that is the first step. The ultimate goal is to make a sale or create a valid lead that will bring in a future sale. Whether you goal is to get the visitor to sign up for a newsletter or to purchase a product or service, if that visitor fails to do what you wish, then you have not converted that visitor. How many convert once they see your website is controlled by you. How attractive is your website? Is it truly compelling, making the visitor believe they simply can't live without the product or service your offer? Is the website easy to navigate or is it not very user friendly? Are your sales claims believable or do they seem to be unrealistic? Do you have data to support your claims? These are all factors that are within your power to control.


Even the greatest Google Adwords campaign won't generate conversions into sales or sign-ups if the website the visitor sees is ugly, hard to use or doesn't offer what the advertisement stated. One example seen all too often is the Google ad that indicates "free" but the visitor find that they actually have to pay. Be sure that your website offers exactly what your Google Adwords campaign promises. If you tell the visitor they will find something for "free" then it must be there and it must be free of charge.

Google Adwords Campaigns: Keyword Targeted Versus Site Targeted 

Google Adwords allows you to define not only the keywords your wish to use and thereby target your market audience but you can also define a site targeted campaign. By choosing which websites on which to have your ads displayed, you can either refine your ad campaign or completely blow it, depending on how savvy you are about the difference in the two types of campaigns.


A keyword targeted campaign means that you are targeting any audience that performs a search or visited a partner website that is based on a keyword you have selected. This brings in a broad audience and displays your ad on a wide spectrum of websites.


A site target campaign means that you are selecting from a list of websites the list of sites that will display your Adwords campaign. As long as you select carefully, this can be a very effective campaign, but it means you have to be really choosey where to display your ads.


Let's say, for example, that your Google Adwords campaign is to drive people who are seeking to refinance their homes to your website so that they will fill out a refinancing application with your business. Obviously, you will not want to target sites that also refinance homes, or at least not do so frequently. But since most Adsense sites are informational websites, you'll want to place your ads on the websites that offer only the very best information about refinancing a home so that you will glean the benefit of the respect earned by the great content on the website the visitor landed on to see your ad. Of course, you don't control the content of other people's websites, but you can certainly investigate those that are provided in the website list so that you can choose the very best.


However, in a site targeted campaign, you are counting on the website where you ad is being displayed to be promoted well enough to obtain a lot of traffic. If a visitor never comes to that website, they will never see your ad. Then they don't have the choice to select your ad and click through.


If you use a keyword targeted campaign, you will have your Adwords ads placed in search engine results pages as well as on websites that use that keyword you have selected. This can give you the opportunity to reach visitors that might not find you when using a site targeted campaign.


How do you find the balance? It can be really great to use both a keyword targeted campaign and a site targeted campaign to get the best of both worlds.

If you want to run an effective Google Adwords campaign, you'll find it necessary to learn to use the Google Adwords keyword tool. This handy little tool allows you to select keywords and establish how much you are willing to pay per click for ads that appear on web pages and search engine results pages that contain the identified keywords.


Choosing the right keywords is very important to your success in operating an Adwords campaign. You want to reach an audience that is likely to want and need your product or service so that, once they arrive at your website, they will convert to a sale or lead. When choosing the keyword or keywords that you want to target, keep in mind the keywords that your website is based upon. Driving traffic that are seeking auto parts for late model cars will simply leave the website as soon as they see what is offered and, since you choose the keyword, the click would still cost you money. Instead, focus on keywords that are very directly related to what you offer such as, in the case here, "classic car parts", for example. That way, only those people searching for and visiting websites related to classic cars and parts for those cars will see your Adwords campaign.


The Google Adwords keyword tool allows you to add and remove keywords at any time you choose. You aren't tied to using keywords that aren't working for you for any specific length of time. If you find a keyword you have selected is working very poorly, go to the keyword tool and remove that keyword from your campaign. You might replace it with a better keyword, or simply drop the keyword and not replace it at all.


The greatest thing about Google Adwords is the flexibility. You can change anything about your campaign at any time you want. Keywords that prove effective can be changed to a higher price per click while those that offer little traffic can be changed or removed. Find keywords that drive traffic that converts and stick with those keywords.

Choosing the right keywords is crucial to your campaign. But it should be fairly simple since you already know what keywords your website is designed to support.

For example, if you sell parts and accessories for Harley Davidson motorcycles but none that fit any other make of motorcycle, you wouldn't select "motorcycle" as a keyword. While Google Adwords allows you to establish how much you are willing to pay per click through on your ads, remember that the bids for keywords that pay more will be shown at the top of the list, while those that are paying less per click will be farther down the list of three to five ads shown and will not show up as often.
