Nottingham Goose Fair 700 years of fun and laughter

The Old and...

The New

As most people know Nottingham is famous for Robin Hood and his Merry Men, The Sheriff of Nottingham and Sherwood Forest.

The city however has other claims to fame, as the home of the Lace Industry, home county of Gulliver in Swift's book Gulliver's Travels, home of pharmaceutical giant Boots, and home of the founder of the Salvation Army William Booth. One of the most popular of Nottingham's claims to fame has to be:

The Goose Fair.

As a kid for me this historic annual fair in Nottingham always signalled the fact that we were really in Autumn/ Fall.

You can almost touch the excitement in Nottingham as the travelling fairground families roll into town with their massive trucks and camper homes. School kids talk of nothing else but 'going down the fair'.

Seaside humour at an inland fair - the Cock on a Stick

Goose Fair wouldn't be Goose Fair without a mention of a Cock on a Stick. Those of us with more fertile imaginations will have no trouble conjuring up the predictable 'nudge nudge wink wink' innuenduos that are associated with the purchase of this Goose Fair novelty

It all began over a hundered years ago with the family of Ray Whitehead

This is a photograph of the Old Market Square Nottingham. the Goose Fair was originally a market and it took place here until it relocated in 1928.

This original council house was been replaced by a new building in 1927. The square itself was renovated in 2007.

Goose Fair Build Up

The National Fairground Archive Holds some amazing images of Goose Fair and other UK fairs. They say about themselves that:

"The National Fairground Archive (NFA) was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Sheffield in 1994, with the support of the Showmen's Guild of Great Britain and the Fairground Association of Great Britain. Housed in the Western Bank Library, it is a unique collection of photographic, printed, manuscript and audio-visual material covering all aspects of the culture of travelling showpeople, their organisation as a community, their social history and everyday life; and the artefacts and machinery of fairgrounds."

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning

Alan Sillitoe's image of Goose Fair

"I'll taike yer ter Goose Fair on Thursday," he told Doreen. "I'm not takin yer Satday as yer havena poot out yet and ahl be goan wiv Brenda an Winnie."

The cold night air rushed past him as he hurtled down the helter-skelter, before landing in a heap at the bottom where two swaddies were waiting. The last thing he remembered before he fell unconscious was that he needed a drink.

"Wassup?" said Doreen.

"Not a lot," Arthur said, nursing 91 major fractures and 136 stab wounds. "Less go doon pub an haff 6,436 paints." "

A wonderful story with characters speaking with the unique Nottingham accent. This accent is extremely difficult to immitate with most people lapsing into a variant of the Yorkshire dialect.

Amazon synopsis:

Working all day at a lathe leaves Arthur Seaton with energy to spare in the evenings. A hard-drinking, hard-fighting young rebel of a man, he knows what he wants and he's sharp enough to get it. And before long, his carryings-on with a couple of married women is local gossip. But then one evening he meets a young girl in a pub, and Arthur's life begins to look less simple.

This has to be my favourite ride. Vivid memories as a kid carrying the mat up the stairs and then setting off down the slide with me in front and my Dad behind...brilliant!

Ron Taylor - Fairground Boxer

Goose Fair's legendary boxing booth owner

This is one booth I never had the courage to have a go in!

Ron Taylor, who died aged 95, he owned Britain's last fairground boxing booth.

A showman for more than 60 years, he travelled the country with his Excelsior booth every summer, offering contenders the chance to step into the ring and take their chance with his team of boxers and wrestlers.

It certainly is! And its a real 'money magnet' so its best to explain to the kids that they're on a budget and to spend wisely otherwise its 'family therapy' time!!
