Conservative Values: Why I Am a Republican
My wife asked me to write a small explanation of why I am a Republican. Here's what I wrote. I hope you find it interesting...and challenging. I'd also like to know why YOU are a Republican or Democrat. If you are neither, pick the party you are leaning toward today. Let the Duel begin!
Why Am I a Republican?
The ten most dangerous words in the English language are "Hi, I'm from the government, and I'm here to help." -- President Ronald Reagan
- I believe in freedom of religion, not freedom from religion.
- I do not believe in big government.
- I believe in the depravity of man and in the rule of law.
- I believe in the free market.
- I believe higher taxes are part of the democratic agenda and lead to a dependence upon a large government.
- I believe that lower taxes breed a stronger economy by keeping earned income in the hands of the worker.
- I believe social welfare programs do not help, but hurt individuals.
- I believe in the privatization of most if not all sectors of our economy.
- I believe government control of the healthcare industry will destroy the best healthcare in the world.
- I believe in individual responsibility and not dependence upon social welfare.
- I believe in the death penalty.
- I believe that a large standing army is the best deterrent to violence in the world today.
- I believe that the war in Afghanistan and Iraq are necessary wars to protect this nation and other nations of the world from flagrant terrorism.
- I believe that this world is a safer place without Saddam Hussein.
- I believe that men and women are different.
- I believe that marriage has always been and should always be between one man and one woman.
- I believe that homosexuality is lethal to any civilization.
- I believe in the sanctity of life, that life begins at the moment of conception and that abortion is among the greatest evils this world has ever seen.
- I do not support the United Nations as it stands today.
- I believe in life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and so I am proud to announce that I am a Republican in 2008.

What are people supposed to do who don't fit into either mold? I am anti-abortion, but pro-welfare. I am anti-war, but pro free market. It's so discouraging not to be able to vote for a party that I fully believe in.

Two main reasons for my siding with the GOP are...
1. I'm pro-life and the Democratic party is so in bed with big abortion that pro-life dems aren't even given a voice within their party. If any politician can turn his thumb down to an unborn baby, that politician has no value what-so-ever for the sanctity of human life. At least life other than their own. Why would I want that person to represent me in some government capacity?
2. I see big government as a threat to our freedom. While both parties have done more than their share of spending, I expect the Republicans to wise up while the Democrats continue to spend money that our posterity to the 5th and 6th generation haven't earned yet.
The list goes on and on; things like the global warming hysteria and the cap and trade taxes that go along with it. The idea that homosexuals should somehow be protected by special laws because of a chosen behavior. The fact that Keith Olbermann is one of them. (shutter)

WhitU4ever says:
First of all, no one can give me a good or even logical reason that they are a Democrat. Dems like to swear, call Reps names, tell me what a Democrat used to be, which is really what a modern day Republican is, lie, or try to convince me that some conspiracy theory is real, but never have I felt that I could be a Democrat and be proud of it at the same time.
Second, Republicans have an actual code of values and stances on issues that agree with my own values and stances on issues, such as less government control, believing in capitalism (free markets/hard work) rather than sucking our thumbs and crying for Uncle Sam to pick us up hold us, respecting our military and the freedoms they protect, believing in the genius and virtue that the constitution was written with and the freedoms that it protects (such as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness), understanding the elementary logic that if we keep aborting our babies, marrying the same sex, and forbidding citizens to protect themselves with firearms, (which is code for population control) there will be few left to fight the rapidly multiplying terrorists, and those left will be so wrapped up in themselves and their problems (such as poverty, remorse, and STD's) and so dependent on the Government, that they won't even see it coming, let alone know how to hold a gun and fire it.

FASTERCAT says:
I believe the Bill of Rights and the Constitition say what they mean and mean what they say and nothing more.
I believe in States sovereignty above congressional mandates.
I believe our rights come from our creater, not the government.
I believe in pragmatism, not sensationalism.
I believe the democrat leadership has a hidden agenda to reduce our country to authoritarian communism.

For nearly every reason you stated above. The only one I'm a little iffy on is the death penalty. On that I believe there are crimes worthy of it, I just don't think that "I" am very torn on that one topic. God Bless you for openly stating your views.

Democrat
LairMistress says:
Well, I am a registered Democrat; but I'd like to belong to a party where poor, working-class, homeless and unemployed/underemployed people had more of a voice. Neither major party seems to speak for people on low/limited incomes. Also, I want my party to be stronger on environmental issues and green industry. I would probably switch to the Green Party if they could come up with more viable candidates in election years...

In her most controversial and fiercely argued book yet, Ann Coulter calls out liberals for always playing the victim - when in fact, as she sees it, they are the victimizers. In GUILTY, Coulter explodes this myth to reveal that when it comes to bullying, no one outdoes the Left. GUILTY is a mordantly witty and shockingly specific catalog of offenses which Coulter presents from A to Z. And as with each of her past books, all of which were NYT bestsellers, Coulter is fearless in her penchant for saying what needs saying about politics and culture today.

What are the two great lies of the 20th century?
Is there a solution to evil?
What matters more, blood or love?
Can a good man go to a striptease show?
Do you think you have the answers? ...Think a second time.
Dennis Prager, theologian and philosopher turned talk-show host, is one of the most brilliant and compelling voices in America today. His extraordinarily popular radio show with the signature sign-off, "Think a second time," coupled with his own biweekly newsletter, has firmly established him as a fixture in intellectual communities nationwide. In Think a Second Time, Prager blends a rigorous and scholarly education with utterly original thinking on current events. From the dangers of idealism to the roots of extremism to his thoughts on God and an afterlife, Prager offers challenging answers to up-to-the-minute questions: Should a single woman have a child? Why don't good homes always produce good children? Is America really racist? Why does the Holocaust not negate the existence of God? Now, with an entirely new section on the precedent-setting "Baby Richard" custody case and an exploration of the issue of blood versus love, Prager continues to demonstrate his ability to draw clear moral lines in the sands of our very troubled times.

The GOP's fall from the triumphant elections of 2004 to the consecutive defeats in 2006 and 2008 didn't have to happen, and doesn't have to be prolonged. But change in crucial aspects of the party's message and messaging must occur quickly if the potential pick-ups of 2010 are to be achieved, and the White House reclaimed in 2012. As soon as the dust settled in 2008, Hugh Hewitt began an intensive series of interviews with key GOP leaders and political analysts and tacticians across the ideological spectrum. The blueprint for Republican renewal presented here reflects the best of that thinking. As the GOP's ranks in D.C. are thinned by retirements of longserving senators such as Ohio's George Voinovich and Missouri's Kit Bond, and as the leadership of Senators McConnell and Kyl and House Members Boehner and Cantor begins to cope with large Democratic majorities and the agenda of President Obama, the Republican grassroots need to re-engage and new energy and ideas must fl ow to restore balance to D.C. The repair of the Republican brand must be begun and sustained or the party's stay in the wilderness will be prolonged far beyond 2010.

- Thank you for sharing your stance on issues. I'm definitely right of center but don't agree with all of any party's platform. Good lens and well put together.

- aslanbooks,i read through your list of why you are a republican but i definately do not share all that you believe in- 1)I believe in the death penalty(God alone gives life so great caution must be taken on matters that bother on the taking of life) 2) I believe that the war in Afghanistan and Iraq are necessary wars to protect this nation and other nations of the world from flagrant terrorism(the use of force will never deter evil,it will rather encourage it) 3)I believe that this world is a safer place without Saddam Hussein(there are worse men presently in this world and george bush cannot claim to be a better man)
