Advertising and marketing are absolutely imperative for the success of almost any business venture. Advertising and marketing are the processes by which a business lets its potential customers know that it exists, what products or services it offers and how it can be of benefit to them as individuals. In the very earliest days of his involvement in Internet Marketing, Gordon Hamilton devised a ploy by which to check out the level of his competition in his immediate area. He checked both The Yellow Pages and Google for website creators and alleged Internet Marketers and picked six of the hundreds which he found, who collectively seemed to form a fairly diverse representation within the field. He then proceeded to invent himself as a sole trader in a small plumbing business and contacted each business in turn to determine what services they could offer him.

When he contacted each business, Gordon Hamilton feigned no knowledge of the Internet and stated merely that family and associates had advised him of his need to move with the times and obtain an online presence. He was certainly offered a wide variety of services, including all-singing, all-dancing websites with flashing lights and loud audio, which could do just about everything except make his coffee! The cheapest of the six service providers wanted £395, (approximately US$600 at that time,) in order to construct such a site.

When Gordon Hamilton emphasised that he was a small time plumber and not the front man in an internationally renowned rock band and only wanted to market his business, he seemed to hit a brick wall. He asked how often his site could be updated and how each business would market him on an ongoing basis. He was advised that update quotes were, "Available on request," but it seemed that he had asked the question re ongoing marketing in fluent Martian, such was the silence with which he was greeted on all six occasions...

Gordon Hamilton does not simply have a checklist which he follows every time he sets about marketing a business on the Internet. There is a structure which he follows; of course there is - but in each and every case, he will consider the nature of the business, the location of the business and the products sold or the services provided by the business, in order to set about marketing the business in what he deems to be the best possible way. An Internet presence is a far more encompassing entity than any single website can ever be but can be built very successfully around an existing website.

Long before I began Internet Marketing seriously, when I was simply exploring what the Internet could offer me from a personal point of view, I had a mini website which attracted several hundred visitors a week on average. Those visitors came from Yahoo and links on other websites and blogs but chiefly they came from Google.

I was "advised" by an online acquaintance - whom I believed was an "expert" - to submit my site details to a SEO company who would have me top of the Google rankings in no time. Yes, I should have known better - but bear in mind that I was a novice at the time! - but I filled in a very short form with my URL, principal tag and I think that it was a one hundred word description of my site content. I was thanked for my input and told I would top the Google rankings for my tag within ninety days.

Since then? That site has had not one solitary hit from Google! It still gets traffic from both Yahoo and the links but it appears to have been black-listed by the biggest player of them all.

Spamming

Spamming is essentially the bulk submission of material online to people who did not request it, do not need it and most certainly of all, do not want it! It is amazing how many people believe that by sending out links to their Web presences en masse in this way, they will know huge traffic levels and thus great levels of success. It does not work that way.
