Wrestling Highlights
Gorgeous George didn't have to win all of his matches to remain a star. In fact, match results show that he lost quite a few matches, many while putting hometown heroes over who were lesser talents. Often George was booked to win to move along a series of grudge matches. He beat Enrique Torres on March 26, 1947 to win the Los Angeles Heavyweight Championship.
In 1949, George made national news when he defeated Ernie Dusek at Madison Square Garden. This was the first card at the Gardens in twelve years.
On May 26, 1950, George won a match with Don Eagle for the AWA (Boston) World Heavyweight Championship.
Other titles George won was the NWA Southern Heavyweight Championship and the Gulf Coast Championship.
One of George's most publicized losses was to Whipper Billy Watson at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. George's hair was on the line and he lost. A national TV audience, saw George shaved bald in the center of the ring.
