A Toasty Winter Love Standard

As any Irving Berlin fan knows, I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm first appeared in a movie titled On the Avenue in 1937. As with so many of Berlin's fabulous songs, it was an instant hit and Billie Holiday covered the song that same year. Over the seventy-plus years since it first became popular, this wintry love song has moved performers and audiences alike through jazzy, big band, bluesy, and rock versions recorded by some of the most popular acts of any given decade.

Here, I've assembled dozens of cover versions of I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm, in video and audio formats, as well as sharing my favorite version and a poll where you can vote for your own. I've also included the lyrics for the song and places to get sheet music. Please let me know which version most reminds you of the love that keeps you warm.

The Lyrics for I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm

This is the Ella Fitzgerald Version

Irving Berline at the PianoThe snow is snowing and the wind is blowing
But I can weather the storm
What do I care how much it may storm?
For I've got my love to keep me warm

I can't remember a worse December
Just watch those icicles form!
Oh, what do I care if icicles form?
Oh, I've got my love to keep me warm

Off with my overcoat, off with my glove
I need no overcoat, I'm burning with love
My heart's on fire, the flame grows higher
So I will weather the storm
What do I care how much it may storm?
Oh, I've got my love to keep me warm

The snow is snowing, the wind is blowing
But I can weather the storm
What do I care how much it may storm?
Oh, I've got my love to keep me warm

I can't remember a worse December
Just watch those icicles form
What do I care if icicles form?
Oh-ho-ho, I've got my love to keep me warm

Off with my overcoat, off with my glove
I need no overcoat, I'm burning with love
My heart's on fire, the flame grows higher
So I will weather the storm
What do I care how much it may storm?
Oh, I've got my love to keep me warm

My Favorite Cover of I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm

The Mills Brothers Make It Wonderful

The Great American Songwriters series offers some of the best versions of American standards that I've ever heard. On this album of Irving Berlin's songs, you'll get The Mills Brothers doing a fantastic doo wop version of I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm, with a bonus Bing Crosby White Christmas and Bobby Darin proving that he can sing like no one else, twice. I can't recommend the series strongly enough and this volume in particular.

I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm from the Greats

You can watch Dick Powell in 1937 with Alice Faye popping in at the end (and check out that dress!), Ella Fitzgerald (of course) with Louis Armstrong doing a great uber-fast version, Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Judy Garland, Rosemary Clooney with Tony Randall and Tab Hunter, and the Kay Starr remixed version that seems to play in all of the stores over the holiday season. I threw Lily Frost and Dinah Washington in there somewhere, too, and The Mills Brothers with their lovely voices. The videos do tend to get pulled from YouTube regularly so please let me know if a promised version has been pulled.
