I've Got You Under My Skin: A Cole Porter Standard

You've Gotten Under the Skin of Many Swingin' Cats

Cole Porter wrote I've Got You Under My Skin in 1936, as part of the score for the movie "Born to Dance", which fans of Jimmy Stewart may remember as starring Eleanor Powell. (Trivia tidbit: Virginia Bruce actually performed the song in the movie.) The song was such a hit that it was nominated for an Oscar (and Academy Award). Then, the cover versions began appearing.

They've kept appearing for over seventy years. Indeed, the lyrics for the song seem to speak to many people, both of a tentative new love and one that has weathered many a storm to survive, against the odds, over the decades. When you add Cole Porter's fantastic music you've got a love song that can stand up to repeated revisions and remakes.

I must admit that I sing I've Got You Under My Skin to my children, so it has a special place in my heart. I've loved it since I first heard Sinatra, "Live at the Sands", crooning the song with the Count Basie Orchestra (pardon me while I swoon). I'd already heard a least a dozen versions and found many more in researching this lens. Please enjoy these and let me know if I've managed to miss your personal favorite.

My Favorite Version of I've Got You Under My Skin

It took me ages to decide on one version of I've Got You Under My Skin to feature. It's such a fabulous, and often-recorded song that I have several that I very much enjoy. The one on this album is my absolute favorite, though...today.

It's got Frank Sinatra, it's got the Count Basie Orchestra, and it swings so hard you'll find yourself putting down your martini and taking a spin around the dance floor, if only in your mind. Frankie's version of I've Got You Under My Skin starts out sweet and ends up in true Sinatra style.

Proof that Cole Porter Really Knew How to Write a Song

I've got Sinatra, Sinatra with U2's Bono, Michael Buble, Brazilian songstress Elis Regina, a relatively bizarre Eartha Kitt cover, Katherine McPhee (with Chris Botti), and a few more.

Lyrics for I've Got You Under My Skin

The Iconic Frank Sinatra Version

I've got you under my skin
I've got you deep in the heart of me
So deep in my heart that you're really a part of me
I've got you under my skin

I've tried so not to give in
I've said to myself, "This affair never will go so well."
But why should I try to resist, when baby will I know so well
That I've got you under my skin?

I'd sacrifice anything come what might
For the sake of having you near
In spite of a warning voice that comes in the night
And repeats, repeats in my ear

"Don't you know you fool, you never can win!
Use your mentality, wake up to reality."
But each time I do, just the thought of you
Makes me stop before I begin
'Cause Ive got you under my skin

[Repeat last two verses]
