Knitting is goth. The magical bonding of yarn. The creation of new and unusual shapes. The ability to make clothes precision fit to your whims and ignore the latest fad. The graceful (or not so graceful) motions of imposing your will on a recalcitrant ball of yarn. And of course, getting to hold pointy sticks in the palm of your hand.
With all these benefits, what else would a vampiress do on those dreary winter mornings before retiring to her coffin? It is my goal to provide the most complete listing of goth knitting patterns on the net, so that every vampiress (and vampire) can spend less time in searching for the perfect pattern, and more time knitting.

Goth Knitting Sites
- The AntiCraft!
- "No more would we be cowed into silence by cheerful scrapbook stickers. Never again would we be forced to gleefully execute a sweater of intarsia puppies." A Goth crafting zine. (Warning: Not all content may be appropriate.)
- Morbid Outlook - DIY Craft
- Links to various gothic crafting resources, including knitting, beading, and sewing.
- Vintage Stitch-O-Rama!
- Severina's patterns, with attitude.
- Welcome to Punk Knits!!
- Technically punk, rather than goth, this site still looks like it has good potential for an online knitting community outside the mainstream. They also sell skull knitting needles.
- Welcome to Knitty!
- Knitty is a free web-only knitting magazine with a sense of humor. A lot of unusual patterns, many of which are goth suitable.
- Vickie Howell Blog
- There were so many patterns here I liked I decided to just link to her blog. Scroll down a bit and you should find her free patterns in the left sidebar. Check out her Ascot scarves and 'Purple Skein', a Victorian punk wristlet pattern.
- CraftyDiversions - Patterns
- Just a few patterns--a corset laced scarf here, a classic pair of skull socks there... Don't miss the cat claw fingerless gloves.
Don't forget your knitting soundtrack!

- Lady's Victorian Mitts
- This is a vintage fingerless mitt pattern--probably not for beginning knitters.
- Twinkle Toes Socks
- Toe-up socks which are supposed to be easy for beginners. Not intrinsically goth, but I like the lacy pattern.
- Knitted Flower
- Fairly simple and nifty knitted flower pattern.
- Monk Hat with Pattern!
- A nice simple toque with a garter stitch edge.
- Lace Up Opera Gloves
- Gorgeous fingerless opera gloves--laced up with ribbon.
- Flying Bat Scarf
- Repeated lace pattern in the shape of a flying bat. The site says: "For the Chinese, bats are symbols of good luck, as is the colour red; you can't go wrong wearing this cherry coloured scarf with flying bats." But as we all know, it's better in black.
- Victorian Lace Shawl
- Pretty lace shawl, worked from the top down. Includes tips for substituting other lace stitches you like better.
- Scallop Choker Necklace
- A dramatic choker with beads. This is knit from a chart, but she provides a link to written directions if you prefer that.
- Anything Knitted and Crocheted: Tragedy Mask
- A chart and written directions for a tragedy mask. This is touted as a dishcloth, but it seems it could be incorporated into any piece of flat knitting, such as a scarf or the front of a sweater.
- Knit a Halloween Spider
- Knit and crochet patterns for making a small spider. Knit patterns uses dpns.
- The Knitting Fiend: Push The Envelope; Knit this Spider.
- An alternative way to knit a spider using a technique for knitting a tube on two needles.
- Tangled in laces...: Meet Chauncey...
- A stuffed skull knit on dpns. Finished size - approx. 6 3/4" tall, 4" or so wide
- Frillybits: An Exercise in Wild Knitting
- "This design is very flexible. Literary - the cords that run down the sides allow it to be scrunched into a tight frill or relaxed out into flatter piece. In the hair, it can be worn as a girlish Alice-band or frilled up into a scrunchie. It also works round the neck as an elegant, rather Edwardian, "ruff" of a scarf. Or, if you want to be "wild" in a slightly risqué way, high on the thigh as a frilly garter."
- Frankenstein's Monster Cloth
- For those of you have been thinking, "If only I had a dishcloth with the face of Frankenstein's monster on it..."
- Cobweb Lace Shawl
- "This shawl is just the thing for a little extra warmth on a summer evening. It is a lovely spider's web of silk and mohair, inspired by some fabulous yarn, the simple shaping of Elizabeth Zimmermann's Pi Shawl and the need for an easily memorized pattern on a long road trip."
- Batsy Mittens
- A pdf file with a chart for knitting bat mittens.
- Punk Rock Corset Gloves
- "They are knit straight with shaping on both sides for the wrist, then finished with an applied i-cord for either side of the "corset" with extra spaces for the lacing holes."
- Spider-Web Sockies
- Note: It costs $6 to download this pattern (pdf). Even though it's not a free pattern I found these web and spider beaded lace socks too charming not to post.
- Annlina Fingerless Glove/Gauntles
- A simple pattern for a fingerless glove/gauntlet--it extends up past the elbow. Perfect for beginners, showcasing a special yarn, or as springboard for using your own favorite stitch pattern.
- I present to you a Very Silly Hat.
- A three-horned jester's hat, easily modifiable for as many horns as you prefer. I could see it in hot pink for punk, or black and silver for goth.
- Stuffed Brain Slug Pattern
- Brain slug, to be worn on a headband. Yeah, this is more on the punk side of things, but it amuses me.
- Knit a Crystal Ball: A project that beginners can knit, too!
- "This is an easy beginner project that uses scrap yarn to make a fun Halloween decoration."
- Myriads of Mushrooms
- Knit to the colors of your favorite toadstool, or simply in shades of classic black. Could also be embroidered with spiders and other frightening creatures.

Skulls and Skeletons
- DomiKNITrix--free skull knitting pattern
- A free skull chart with nice detail. Shows how it can be used in sweaters and afghans.
- Skull Scarf
- Scarf with stripes and charted skulls.
- Skull and Crossbones Lace
- Nothing says romantic Goth like skull shapes worked into the edge of a lace pattern. I could see these making great curtains (worked up in black, of course) but don't overlook shawls, antimacassars, table runners, and pillowcases as uses for this indispensible pattern.
- Hello Yarn Handspun Yarns.... Free Knitting Patterns
- Tucked in among the run-of-the-mill patterns here you will find skull mittens, socks, cap, and knitting tote.
- Katydid Knits: Jack Sparrow's Favorite Socks
- Skull and crossbones socks pattern. I find these to be on the understated and elegant side of skull patterns.
- Moth Heaven: Swab the Deck, Empty the Scuppers, Turn the Heel
- Skull and crossbones socks again, this time with an argyle pattern. Bizzare enough to be worth seeing even if you don't decide to make them.
- Skull Chart
- A simple skull and crossbones chart.
- MagKnits: Skull Fairisle Wristwarmers
- "Skull Fair Isle pulse warmers." What more is there to say?
- craftgrrl: ghettoknitting project
- A slightly more cartoonish skull and crossbones chart.

- A skelatal fish and a stuffed toy all in one. The skeleton is supposed to be worked in duplicate stitch, but perhaps you could use the provided chart to knit it in as you go, if you were so inclined.
- skull illusion scarf
- This you have to see--straight on only simple stripes are visible, but from an angle the skulls appear.
- Knitted Skull and Crossbones Dishcloth
- Goths have to wash dishes too...
- Skull Dog Sweater
- The perfect accesory for a goth's best friend.
- Felted Bag With Skulls
- Pattern for a knit goth tote bag.

- Info on skull hat knit on dpns and circular needles, with a link to the pattern in pdf.
- Knituition: Skully Keychain
- Fast and easy skull keychains to knit (by chart) and felt.
- Pretty Punk Blanket
- "What else says 'pretty' and 'punk' better than hot pink and skulls? This blanket is knit in five long strips, like scarves, then seamed together at the end. It's a time-saving technique that eliminates seaming individual squares one by one."
- Jollyfish Hat
- A pdf chart of a skeletal fish, and some hints on turning this into a hat. Since there are no step-by-step directions this project would work better for experienced hat knitters, but others could apply the skeletal fish chart to simpler projects.

Knitting and sewing is not my strongpoint, but I enjoy anyone who can pull this off and knit some cool designs, I prefer to draw mine on paper and colour them with felt tips, but that is just me. Posted June 14, 2008 |
