It's a spicy Hungarian dish and it's also diverse things!
I know you know, goulash is a hot dish, originally from Hungary, made of beef, onions, red peppers and paprika powder which is digested in my other lens on Hungarian Goulash. The other definition of goulash says that it is occasionally used to mean any mixture of diverse things. According to Answers.com, it is a mixture of many different elements; a hodgepodge. For the purpose of this lens, I'm adhering to the latter definition; i.e. diverse things!
Goulash, the spicy dish, at a glance
Goulash is a (sometimes) spicy dish, originally from Hungary, usually made of beef, onions, red peppers, and paprika powder. Its name comes from Hungarian Category: wikt - :gulyás|gulyás (pronounced goo-yash), the word for a cattle stockman or herdsman.

Do you remember having stew as a child? I hope you liked it! It sure seems like I used to have lots of stew when I was younger. Think of this as stew, Hungarian style--that's Hungarian Goulash. Goulash--Gulyás in Hungarian...

Goulash Genealogy

I was inspired to write this particular lens because of my genealogy. When asked about my ethnic heritage, I often referred to my "Goulash Genealogy."
A grandfather was from Szatmar, Hungary which became Satu Mare, Romania after World War I. His mother was thought to be Polish, and quite possibly Ruthenian. A grandmother was from a town in Czechoslovakia which is now part of The Slovak Republic since 1993.
Another grandfather and grandmother were from the Ukraine and Poland and quite possibly were Ruthenian.
Hence, a hodge podge of Hungarian, Slovakian, Ruthenian, Polish, Ukrainian ~ all Eastern European Goulash!

The rich and varied history of the Jewish people is reflected in the glorious diversity of their food and cooking. This awe-inspiring volume takes you on a fascinating journey through the evolution of a cuisine that is inexorably linked to the history and geography of its people, and in particular to the culinary traditions of the Eastern European countries, undeniably the foundation of so many classic Jewish dishes today. This definitive illustrated guide includes recipes from the many European, Middle Eastern, North African and American countries rich in Jewish heritage, in particular the Eastern European countries of Russia, Poland, the Ukraine, Germany, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria and the East Adriatic. An entralling introduction traces the evolution of this well-travelled fare, and presents a veritable tapestry of recipes derived from a tradition of food sharing, festivals and the resourceful use of simple, local ingredients. An easy-to-follow chapter on the essentials of kashrut and kosher cooking explains the significance of the different foods, and the appropriate ways to prepare and eat them. Many recipes are cross-cultural fusions, and the reader is often given the option of using non-traditional ingredients or trying out non-kosher alternatives. Over 400 recipes then offer an astonishing array of flavourful dishes: irresistible appetizers and dips, hearty soups and stews; meat, poultry and fish; breads, rice and grain dishes; gloriously rich pastries and sweet bakes.
