Why Provide Homes For Birds?

Why supply homes for birds? Many beneficial songbirds depend on natural nesting sites, such as holes in trees. Because of urban sprawl and logging, many of these nesting sites are being diminished and populations of the birds dependent on them are dwindling. To counteract this trend, it is becoming more and more important that these nesting sites be replaced by human supplied housing. A great benefit of supplying homes for birds is being able to observe birds raising their young in your backyard.

You will also increase the quality of life in your backyard. Birds can eat thousands of insects every day, especially when feeding their young. So, more birds means less bugs. And the beautiful song of the Finch, Purple Martin or Bluebird can't help but brighten your day.

Gourd Homes For Birds

Provide Gourd Birdhouses to Attract Cavity Nesting Birds

Gourds are excellent natural homes for birds. Birds are more attracted to gourds than to a manufactured birdhouse. Leaving a little gourd material in the birdhouse will provide some nesting material for the birds. You can also make sure there are twigs, string, hair, corn fodder, long grasses and mud nearby. Where you place the gourd
birdhouse is also important in attracting birds. Purple Martins, Swallows, and many Seabirds like living in close proximity (colonies) with other birds of the same species. Most other songbirds do not. Wrens, for example, are very territorial, and stake out an area for themselves. If you place too many wren houses in a small area, you won't have them all occupied. Putting up one house for each species, with some distance between them, will result in more success in filling them all.
Besides the birds noted above, gourds also make good homes for Bluebirds, Nuthatches, Titmouse, Carolina Wren and Chickadees.

Where To Find Gourds

If you have the space, and like to garden, growing your own gourds is a fun and satisfying hobby. Gourds are harvested in the fall, after the vines die and then must be stored in a dry area for several months to "cure" and harden.
If you don't have the space or want to wait for your gourds to cure, there are many ready to decorate gourds available on Ebay.
