Gout Treatment - Cherries

Believe it or not, when it comes to gout treatment, cherries are high on the list. Evidence has shown that there are compounds in cherries that seem to relieve the pain of gout and other related forms of arthritis. By changing to a gout diet and adding cherry juice on a daily basis, you can reduce both the number of attacks and how long they last.

The Secrets of Cherries and Gout

Studies have shown that just by eating ten to fifteen cherries a day, women lowered their uric acid levels 15%. It seems that you do not have to eat them fresh. Cherry juice and dried cherries will also give good results. What is in a cherry that makes it so special? A compound by the name of anthocyanins (these are the pigments that make cherries so red) helps the body to reduce inflammation. It is also believed that this same compound reduces the risk of colon cancer, heart attack, and stroke.

As a gout treatment, cherries can be sweet, tart, or of the dark bing variety. They all have approximately the same amount of anthocyanins. And, because they don't have to be fresh, you can get them easily all year round, at supermarkets and health food stores or online.

Cherries also contain quercitin, which helps to prevent swelling

Cherries also contain quercitin, which helps to prevent swelling, by inhibiting histamine production. While all cherries contain quercitin, the sweet varieties contain less than tart cherries do. Quercitin can be taken as a supplement, but only if you are NOT on antibiotics. Make sure your doctor knows everything that you are taking in the way of medications.

Vitamin C is often recommended as part of a gout treatment. Cherries, along with lots of citrus fruits, other fresh fruits, and raw vegetables, will give you all the vitamin C you need, and will also work to reduce the symptoms of this painful disease.
