Students Should Consider Public Service

In these current tough economic times, many prospective college students have to consider whether want they a high salary or a fulfilling profession. Unfortunately, the prospect of a future paying off a small mountain of debt in the form of college loans has many students focusing more on the prospect of financial gain. This doesn't mean there aren't ways around this. With a little planning and initiative, a student can graduate to become a boon to society and not be paying off loans for the next decade.

Many a private corporation and public agency has set up a number of programs specifically designed to encourage college graduates to pursue public service once they've graduated from traditional and online degree programs. They range from providing scholarship and grant funds to college debt forgiveness plans. They can mean a lot more than a small grant from the local Elk's Lodge, too.

Internships Becoming More Common

For instance, while progress has been made, there is still quite a lot that has to be done about arresting and curing HIV/AIDS. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has set up a series of scholarships and grants for people who are willing to work in the area. They also have other programs for those who are willing to work on drug and alcohol counseling and prevention. These programs are good for both on campus and online colleges. In total the Administration has set up 14 different programs.

Besides getting the financial boost, another aspect of these programs is those who participate gain invaluable work experience. Once they fulfill their internship prerequisites and get their degree, those who went through these programs will be in a much better position than those who didn't. This will help them financially when it's time to move on to the first 'real' job.

Thinking Grants? Think Green!

Another area where one can make a positive impact on the world is in the environmental sciences. As it happens, they may also be able to receive funding for their college programs or volunteer activities. As an example, General Electric has set up its Volunteer Grant program. They have just set up a new such program with Athens State University with a new college grant. They also have 50 other college programs out there.

Actually, GE's Volunteer program is a lot broader than just the environment. Another key component is helping boost the number of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs in schools. Students who participate in these programs can benefit in a number of different ways, depending on the program.

Ask Questions To Enable A Better Education Plan

What this all boils down to is college graduates who want to make a positive impact in the world, but are afraid of the incredible debt load they will accumulate in order to get their needed education, have access to resources they probably never thought of. Consulting a financial aid officer regarding possible college grants and scholarships will unveil a number of other such plans out there.

If that isn't enough, they could end up in a position where they leave school without that mountain of college loans, something the MBA grad might still have to face. In and of itself, that's something quite satisfying in its own right.
