GP30
Originally known as the GP22, the GP30 was EMD's first true second-generation diesel locomotive design, using the well-proven 567 prime mover mated to an entirely new sealed hood design.
The GP30 would be the last Geep for many years to be offerred in a cabless booster variant, although not many of the GP30Bs were ultimately built. Other "speciality" variants were the high short hood locomotives purchased by the Southern and N&W.

The BNSF still rosters GP30s, although in rebuilt form. The GP30u rebuild had been instituted by the Santa Fe; this entailed a thorough rebuild from the ground up - the 567 engines were retained, but given 645 power assemblies. The Burlington Northern's GP39 rebuilds were similar (although slightly more powerful) and essentially brought the second-generation GP30s up to the standard of third-generation Dash-2 units.

GP35
First turned out in the fall of 1963, the GP35 replaced the GP30 in the EMD catalog, and introduced a new angular cab design that would be standard on La Grange diesels for decades. The GP35 had the 567D3A prime mover rated at 2,500hp, and would be the last new-build Geep powered by a 567 variant. US railroads bought 1,251 GP35s, while 83 other locomotives were built for Canadian and Mexican roads. Virtually all GP35s were built with low short hoods, but the Southern, Norfolk & Western, and NdeM bought high-nose units.
EMD also offered a non-turbocharged version, the GP28, in 1964-66. Only 31 examples were built, and 15 of those were for export to Mexico and Peru. Illinois Central was the major domestic customer, buying a dozen engines. Although GP28 sales were poor, many standard GP35s were later de-turbocharged to save on maintenance costs.
Atlas made N-scale GP35s in B&O, Burlington Northern, CP Rail, Conrail, Erie Lackawanna, N&W, PRR, and Union Pacific roadnames
