Is there GPS for cats?

There are GPS systems for tracking cats. However as of the date of writing (January 2010), the GPS systems available are not very workable. The reason being is that they are still a quiet large. Perhaps some cats may wear one, but I would guess the majority wouldn't be happy with having one around their neck. In a few years, there may be smaller GPS for cats. So what other solutions are available at the moment?

I have been looking for a GPS for my cat as we have just moved home and I wanted to prevent him from getting lost in a new area. I have done a bit of research into the systems available to keep track of your cat and to find your cat when its gone missing. What I have found is detailed in the article below. There are a lot of other options instead of GPS for cats. Read about them below.

Wireless RF Locator

There are many wireless radio frequency Locators which I believe are currently the next best thing to GPS for cats. These devices are small enough to fit on a cat's collar. When you want to know where they are you press the button on the control and the device on the cat's collar will bleep which will lead you to the cat.

These devices aren't perfect but they should make it easier to find a missing cat. The cons are that they only work within a small area which vary from device to device (100 feet at best). It also may take a bit of walking around to find the cat. The review on Amazon are varied but based what I've read on the whole they do work. People have used them to locate cats.

For me it's just an extra bit of peace of mind, an extra way to find your cat if it does go missing.

Read on to get links and reviews of two different types of products.

Key Finder Wireless RF Item Locator Remote Control, Pet, Wallet, Keyfinder. (Free Extra Batteries).

This RF locator by 2Goproducts is good value at £39.98. It has an overall rating of 4 stars on Amazon which is not bad for this kind of product. Many people use these types of locators to find keys and other items but people use them for finding cats too.
If you look at the most favorable review on Amazon, the reviewer has used it on a cats collar. It works well within a 25 to 30 feet radius (the furthest it will work to us up to 60 feet) so is great for finding cats who don't wander too far. Some of the complaints of the device are it isn't loud enough so its probably not the best choice if your a little hard of hearing.

The Loc8tor

The Loc8tor is a more expensive but it can detect items up to 100 to 400 feet away (depending on the environment) so is better for cats who wander a little further. They have mixed reviews. I think if you purchase one of these the thing to bear in mind is it is more of a clue to if you're getting closer or further away from your cat. You will probably have to do a bit of walking and searching to find your cat still. If you don't mind doing this and need an extra bit of piece of mind it is a good product to have.

The two products featured below are the loc8tor and loc8tor lite. The Loc8tor plus has some extra features including an alert mode which enables an invisible safety zone to be set a pet. As soon as they leave your preset area Loc8tor immediately informs you.

Pet ID tags for cats

As well as a loc8tor it is worth having a personlized tag for you cat with their name and a contact telephone number. This can be attached to their collar so if they do go missing and somebody finds them, they know they have a home and they know where to call.

Microchipping

I can't stress how important it is to microchip your cat. Your cat can loose their collar, locator and anything else you have attached to them and nobody will know who they belong to. If your cat is microchipped and taken to a vet or cat shelter they can scan the microchip in the cat and find out who to contact.

Our cat Freddie has been given back to us on 3 occasions because when he went missing somebody found him, handed him in to a cat shelter and they called us. (My cat is a bit of a wanderer which is why I've researched all options to keep tabs on him).

It's so cheap to microchip your cat. Even if they are an indoor cat, please get them microchipped as you never know when they might escape. Enquire at your vet to get this done asap.
