GPS - Navigator

GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It was originally developed for the defence purposes. It is a system of nearly 24-32 satellites orbiting the Earth which transmit precise microwave signals enabling GPS receivers to determine their current location, the time, and their velocity/direction and user gets precise time and location anywhere, anytime and under any atmospheric conditions. It facilitates our television system, wireless phones, mobile/cellphone networks, computer networks and the last but not the least is in-car navigation systems. Latest developments in its technology has made it a "must have" in most of the vehicles. It is equally useful for researchers.

GPS works in all weather conditions, 24 hours a day, anywhere on the planet. No charges involved to use GPS services provided by navigational Devices.
Paper maps which were the order of the past cannot recalculate your route or alert you when you take a wrong turn. While text and voice-guided directions are, in fact, standard functions performed by today's automotive GPS devices, all designed to make your time on the road less stressful.
Satellites orbiting the earth, ships, boats and other shipping vessels while in open sea can only rely upon these systems. Mountaineers, when at higher altitudes, could get their information only from these GPS. And we all know that safe airtravel is possible only due to this device.

Garmin is most popular brand. Some of its models are preprogrammed with base maps for major roadways and interstates and detailed street-level maps for North America.

Some models of Magellan are preloaded with street-level maps of the entire U.S. and Canada. Some of them operate in several languages and can be transferred between cars.

The TomTom's models come with maps of the major U.S. roadways along with a CD containing comprehensive street-level maps and points of interest for all the states which can be uploaded via a mini-USB port on the device.

Other popular brands are Lowrance, Raymarine, Humminbird and Iridium
