Find a GPS with Camera Functions for Your Outdoor Adventures

Bookmark and ShareGPS devices are great tools when you're outdoors. They provide the navigation you need to find your way, to know of changing weather conditions, and more. Now, GPS with camera functions included are the next step and offer even greater utility for users.

Garmin has introduced it's first GPS device with a built-in camera. You can see it here and when more devices come along, we'll highlight those as well.

What's Cool about a GPS with Camera Functions?

If you're an outdoor enthusiast a GPS device with built-in camera can be the perfect tool. Whether you hike, hunt, fish, bike or whatever, this combination is an advantage.

  • Reduce the amount of equipment you carry. If you're photographic needs are simple, then there is no need to carry a separate camera to take along,

  • Geotagging, which the camera performs, allows you to remember your location later and to navigate back to the same location more easily.

  • Because it's designed within a rugged, outdoor GPS device the camera is waterproof, dust proof, and shock proof unlike many other basic compact cameras you might purchase. It will tolerate your rugged lifestyle much better.

Oregon 550t is the first GPS device with a camera for hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts. It comes with built-in U.S. topographic data for the continental U.S. and a worldwide basemap with shaded relief. Users get information on national, state and local parks and forests, along with terrain contours, elevation information, trails, rivers, lakes and points of interest. Designed for outdoor use, it's housed in a waterproof casing which resists exposure to dust, dirt, and being bumped around. It's navigation features also provide users with a rugged 3-inch diagonal, sunlight-readable, color touchscreen display and built-in 3-axis tilt-compensated electronic compass, so that you always know your heading. Its barometric altimeter allows you to precisely know your altitude and changing weather conditions while you're out in the elements.

The built-in camera is a 3.2 megapixel device with 4x digital zoom, autofocus and geotagging for all of your photos. Pictures can be taken with a landscape or portrait orientation. It also has a USB port to allow you to transfer your pictures to computer quickly and easily. The Oregon 550T also accepts MicroSD cards, giving it the memory you need to store the images you take.

This device also allows you to wirelessly share your waypoints, tracks, routes and geocaches with other Oregon and Colorado users with the push of a button.

    Are Your Photos More Important?

In Search & Rescue, we use GPS units a lot, and I've heard some folks talking about this one. It's pricey but could come in very handy in our line of (volunteer) work, because we could take photos of evidence, footprints, etc. and have the coordinates recorded automatically, rather than having to mark them separately ... which occasionally people neglect to do.
