Wow what a gadget! But freedom out the door.
Worried parents will be able to monitor the movements of their children via a satellite tracking device.

The device-a gps kids watch - which can be carried in a rucksack - allows parents back at home to pinpoint exactly where their child is when they step out.

You can see satellite images on the computer of the area where their child is and the route they are taking.

This Children GPS Watch also includes a panic button and mobile phone; it also allows a child to send an SOS text message to their parent's mobile phone if they get into trouble.

Aimed at children aged between six and 12 years, the makers of the device Kiditel - French car company Telematics - claim the gps kids watch gives parents peace of mind when their child is out of sight.

The device works by allowing parents to access a secure part of the Telematics website from their own computer.

From there, they can view satellite images of the area where their child is - allowing them to follow their progress along a route.

If the child gets lost, the device also has an SOS panic button which they can press.

This immediately sends a text message to the parents' pre-registered phone number, giving the child's coordinates.

Once they get the message, the parent can then phone the Kiditel - to see what has gone wrong.

The device is about the size of a pack of cards - also filters incoming calls to allow only pre-registered numbers.

Although the device is only currently available in France, where there is a long waiting list, it is soon to be on the market in the UK and America.

It could also help find children if they get lost in a busy places, such as at a theme park.

But Michelle Elliott, director of Children's charity Kidscape, warned parents not to become too dependent on the device.

She said: "Tracking devices are useful to a certain degree but they may be more useful to follow an elderly relative or a very hyperactive child.

"Most children, I'd imagine, will probably lose this device pretty quickly.

"Anything that makes children safer is a good thing but is the world really that unsafe that parents need to electronically track their children? I don't think so."
