Graduation ceremony is also known as commencement exercise, convocation or invocation, during which graduates receive diplomas for their degree. Its origin dates back to Medieval Europe when men and women typically wore gowns or robes, and hoods were worn as head covering in the cold schools. Later on, a skull cap replaced the hood. Today, Oxford University's "motor board" style cap is commonly used.
