Gran Canaria - A Tourism Island

Despite Gran Canaria boasting just 800,000 occupants, the island pulls in 2.2 million visitors a year.

The Grand Canary

Gran Canaria (Grand Canary in English) is known as a "Miniature Continent" because of the differing climates and mix of landscape found on the island. It is the third-largest island of the Canary Islands, an archipelago located in Spain.

The south of the island is more popular with tourists because it generally has more sun and warmer weather. Tourists are also more likely to visit the east of the island, because the east is generally flatter and has more beaches, whereas the west is more mountainous and rocky.

What to do?

As Gran Canaria is such a popular tourist destination, most people's biggest question will be "What can I do when I get there". This is of course assuming you don't just want to relax on the beach.

A very popular tourist destination is Maspalomas. Tourist attractions here include the Maspalomas dunes and the Maspalomas lighthouse.

Further to the west there is a small village known as "Little Venice" because of the network it has that resembles Venice.

The island also boasts a vast selection of scuba diving courses.

How do I get around?

Gran Canaria has a good transport system. The island uses a mix of highways and dual-carriageways to create a large network of transport. There is a large fleet of modern buses that keeps the transport network flowing.

Gran Canaria are in talks to add a railway network to the island.

Where should I stay?

One of the best 5 star hotels in Gran Canaria is the Grand Hotel Residencia.

Expedia provides a good page comparing Gran Canaria hotels and useful information for Holidays in Gran Canaria.
