Grand Looks for a Bedroom with Greek and Roman Style

Ranked #34,137 in Home & Garden, #579,716 overall

Much of out heritage comes from the early Greek and Roman civilizations. While the Romans took much of what the Greeks accomplished and claimed it as their own, both civilizations were major contributors to the arts, math, science, religion and culture.

While they had a great influence in all aspects of our modern world, the Greek and Roman influence is most notably felt in the arts and architecture. Even today we use their styles in architecture, and as we create a room design much of the balance and architectural elements come from the Greek and Roman design aesthetic. Symmetry and balance as well as asymmetric design can all be traced directly back to the Greek and Roman roots.

Translate the Greek and Roman aesthetic into a design for a bedroom

Therefore, it is not difficult to translate the Greek and Roman aesthetic into a design for a bedroom. You can pull off a design that is elegantly decadent, light and romantic, or clean and angular, and they all find their roots in the same place. When you are ready to put your design plan together, which one you choose with depend largely on your personal taste.

Both styles employ subtle handling of color. So when you are creating a design around this aesthetic, you will probably plan to use neutrals throughout your design. Earth tones tending towards the browns are prevalent in this style, and any combination of these colors can be blended to create a wonderful effect.

If you want to create a wall for your Grecian room, select three shades of light brown and some glaze. Then paint your entire wall the lightest shade. Use the medium shade mixed with the glaze in a 50/50 ratio. Then with a sponge, dab the glaze mixture onto the surface of your walls. You do not want to completely cover your first coat. As you continue to sponge, you will see an interesting pattern evolve, and your wall will begin to develop texture.

Now, tape off vertical lines on your wall, which will represent columns. Leave a generous amount of space between columns, and you may only want to add this effect to a single wall. Then paint the darkest shade of your three brown colors between your two tape lines. After the paint dries, remove the tape.

The floor is the next place where you will want to focus your attention. While a wood floor would be best if your budget allows, if it does not, you can also use a neutral color carpet with a rich pile to complete the effect.

In any bedroom the focal piece of furniture is the bed. So as you are creating your bedroom design with a Greek and Roman influence, look for a huge bed with an intricately carved headboard. A four poster bed would be ideal, and you can add a canopy if you are trying to create a romantic feeling in your room.

Ready to accessorize

As you get ready to accessorize, remember to be generous with your use of extra large wall art. While you do not need to place old Greek or Roman sculptures in your room to create this look, you will want a artistic element; include metal wall art sculptures to complement the lines and colors used in the room.

Dress your bed with large, fluffy pillows, and you may even want to add a sculptural element over the bed to create a dramatic, focal wall. You can add a candelabra on your dresser or side tables to continue the romantic feeling of the room.

While you create a romantic space in your bedroom using the style developed from Greek and Roman art and architecture, infuse the design ideas with your own creative personality to make your design unique to your bedroom space.
