The 2009 Aintree Grand National Race

The John Smith's Grand National Steeplechase is the world's most lucrative national hunt race. Raced during April at Aintree Racecourse, the Grand National 2009 horse race is contested by some of the finest national hunt racehorses in the world, and is watched by more than half a billion people around the planet.

The Grand National is classified as a grade 3 handicap chase, and is open to six year old and older national hunt racehorses. The race covers a distance of 4 miles and 4 furlongs, with contestants required to clear 30 fences during the course of the Grand National. The race is regarded as the most important handicap steeplechase event on the national hunt racing calendar.

Grand National History

According to Grand National History the majority of historians believe that the Grand National Steeplechase was first run in 1839, when it was won by Lottery. However, this date has been the subject of vigorous debate in recent years, with some historians insisting that the 1936 race at Aintree should be recognised as the first Grand National.

During its history, the Grand National has provided the stage for some of the most heroic performances in the history of horseracing. A number of racehorses have overcome illness or accident to win the race, while the exacting fences used for the race have also contributed to several famously dramatic finishes!

Aintree Racecourse

The Grand National Aintree Racecourse is the home of the Grand National meeting. Located near Liverpool, Aintree Racecourse features two racetracks, the Grand National Course and the Mildmay Course. The Grand National Course is recognised as being one of the most severe in national hunt racing, and is only used for four races each year.

Many of the fences jumped on the Grand National Course have become household names in the United Kingdom, some of which have taken on the names of famous incidents associated with them. Fences like Becher's Brook, Foinavon's Fence and Canal Turn are amongst the most feared in national hunt racing.
