The 2009 Aintree Grand National Race
The Grand National is classified as a grade 3 handicap chase, and is open to six year old and older national hunt racehorses. The race covers a distance of 4 miles and 4 furlongs, with contestants required to clear 30 fences during the course of the Grand National. The race is regarded as the most important handicap steeplechase event on the national hunt racing calendar.

Grand National History

During its history, the Grand National has provided the stage for some of the most heroic performances in the history of horseracing. A number of racehorses have overcome illness or accident to win the race, while the exacting fences used for the race have also contributed to several famously dramatic finishes!
Aintree Racecourse
The Grand National Aintree Racecourse is the home of the Grand National meeting. Located near Liverpool, Aintree Racecourse features two racetracks, the Grand National Course and the Mildmay Course. The Grand National Course is recognised as being one of the most severe in national hunt racing, and is only used for four races each year.Many of the fences jumped on the Grand National Course have become household names in the United Kingdom, some of which have taken on the names of famous incidents associated with them. Fences like Becher's Brook, Foinavon's Fence and Canal Turn are amongst the most feared in national hunt racing.

2009 Grand National Preview
The 2009 Grand National is certain to be one of the year's racing highlights. The rare appearance of a Cheltenham Gold Cup winner in the race will add to the excitement of the 2009 Grand National, as Denman sets out to defeat reigning Grand National champion Comply or Die, in an attempt to become the first horse since Golden Miller to win both races.
