Do I Have a Tale To Tell? I Certainly Do
Grab yourself a cup of coffee, pull up a chair, kick off your shoes and indulge yourself for the next few minutes. I suppose you could say that I was a "War Baby" being born just before the end of the War (World War II, I hasten to add). Though I am not sure you like this expression, but I suppose it best describes "people of a certain age" and there are an awful lot of us around!
I can't say that I remember too much about the war years - certainly none of the hardships, my recollection of my early years are as idyllic with nothing to worry about except what new adventures my friends and I could get up to, and what treasures we would find.
To begin with my Mother and I lived with my Grandparents in the country and there always seemed to be plenty of sunshine, love, fresh air and, oh! those wonderful smells coming out of the kitchen - just thinking about them brings back such evocative memories. I suppose this is where my love of food and thirst for knowledge was born.
I think one of the best things I remember is the taste of food - everything seemed to taste so wonderfully good, perhaps it was because everything was fresh, organic and GM free - you certainly couldn't pop down to the local supermarket for a frozen whatever.
Grandad used to grow his own fruit and vegetables so whenever we needed vegetables for the dinner table we'd just go and pick whatever we needed.
He also reared his own chickens so food was never in short supply and rationing didn't seem to affect us at all. I could tell you a tale or two about my Grandad, maybe I will - but another time. In fact just check in my book ...
The title probably give a hint of what it is all about, except it is a new style of cookbook that gives a rare glimpse into the past, although I am sure there are lots of people who will have the same memories as me, they just haven't written them down.
Who knows, maybe reading my book will inspire you to do the same. It would be nice to think that I could generate so much enthusiasm that you'd want to. You might think that you couldn't possibly write a book - but hey, if I can anyone can. Once you get started (which is the hardest part) the words just keep coming as they act as a trigger for your memories, which keep bursting to the surface having been buried for a long, long time.
So go on - take a look at Grandma's Country Kitchen - you'll enjoy it.
Please let me know what you think.
