Grandma's Magic Syrup

When I was a little girl many moons ago, my grandma would work her magic. If you had a nasty old cough that sometimes came along with the measles or chicken pox. Grandma would go into her kitchen, start peeling onions. She then would put them into her cast iron Dutch oven, she would then cover the onions with white sugar and she would cover the two with water. The flame on the stove would be set to keep a good low boil under the pot.

Soon, the aroma would slowly make its way up the stairwell, to my room. Oh no! I would whisper to my favorite doll, "grandma making that stinky stuff". I would try to hind under the covers, but soon grandma would start up those stairs with her cup of magic better known as "onion syrup". Slowly grandma would climb those stairs by setting down and sliding up one step at a time, she was crippled up with arthritis in her legs, and that climb up those stairs was a real chore for her. When, she reached the top, she would set on the top step and call me over to her. She would take a spoon from her apron and dip it into the syrup and tell me to open wide. Grandma's magic syrup would slide down accompanied with a shiver that ran down my spine; a warm smile from grandma would tell me I did well.

Soon, I would be back to my old self, none the worst for wear from Grandma's Magic Syrup. I always wondered who was the one that started making "onion syrup" and if they ever took the remedy themselves. It still sends shivers down my spine just thinking of it. Watkins cough syrup sure does beat Grandma's on taste.
