It is at a time in history when a rising number of children are being neglected and are living a life where their safety is put second to parents of substance abuse. The sad-est part about this is that most grandparents are willing to step in and help but the parents see it as interference in their rights to raise their children the way they want to.

Most grandparents understand the boundaries that the parents feel should be meet but it is a whole different story when you know that a child is in danger. The 3 main reasons that I feel grandparents rights should be upheld to child custody. Grandparents are a safe place for the children.

1. Grandchildren Need The Love Of Their Grandparents Do you remember how special your grandmother or grandfather always made you feel? I do. It always seemed they had time for me when no one else did.

2. A Need To Know That Your Grandchildren Are Safe It is becoming a well known fact just how many adult people have substance abuse problems. I suppose it is the age of the baby boomers. Most people in my age range have seen the problem evolving over the last 2 decades or longer.

3. Children Need To Feel Safe When I was a small child I never had to wonder if I would wake up and have to fix my own breakfast. Children should not have this responsibility put upon them at the young ages they are.

Grandparents rights are becoming an issue for these very reasons but with these rights comes a responsibility for grandparents to work with the parents to get the grandchildren back into a safe environment. Meaning helping parents until they can overcome whatever addictions they have. Below are 3 things I think grandparents should abide by for the well being of the grandchildren.

1. Avoid Letting The Children Hear You Fighting With Their Parents If your grandchildren hear you fighting with their parents it only heightens the fears they already have.

2. Avoid showing Disrespect The Parents Sometimes this is hard to do and you will have to bite your tongue..but do it so you can have a relationship with your grandchildren. The love of a child is so special.

3. Avoid Missing Visitations if You Have A Grandparents Visitation Schedule.. The last thing your grandchildren need is for you to break the schedule they have with you. They need to know when they are allowed to visit and not have to feel guilty with their parents when they know they are coming to visit. This is not saying you should not keep them more often if necessary or if they want to come more often and it is OK with everyone.

These are trying times and sometimes I even contract myself because we are all just trying to do what is best for a bad situation. Most of us as grandparents do not want to step back into a parenting role but what is the other alternative?
